How does a gearbox work?

There are a range of parts which make up the gearbox and it is an intricate piece of machinery. As shown above, there are a lot of different problems that can arise when it comes to a gearbox which is indicative of the number of moving parts. Just look at the image below!

The gearbox is the second part of the transmission and is engaged after the clutch. As a driver, you’ll obviously know that you can only change gear once you have pressed the clutch down (unless you drive an automatic).

Once the clutch is engaged, the gearbox can switch from one rotor to the next. Once the gear is engaged the gear linkage transfers power from the engine through the gears and onto the car wheels.

As the image above demonstrates, there are a large number parts which are operate with perpetual motion and in constant contact. This creates friction, heat and the wearing down of car parts.

Therefore, it is inevitable that a repair or gearbox replacement will be required.

The most important factor to remember is that if you spot the early signs of a problem you can save yourself a huge amount of money!
