What to look for when buying a bike for kids

It’s wonderful to take kids with you for a ride outside on their bikes. Would you know though what to look for when buying a bike for them? Some tips here what to look for when you want to buy a bike for your child.

  • Buy from a physical bike shop, not online and not from the local department store.
  • Age and height are important to find out which bike is best for your child.
  • Get the proper size bike according to their ability and confidence.
  • Check the brakes – ensure they aren’t too heavy to squeeze.
  • A bike should physically fit.
  • Bike weight – don’t expect your child to be able to bike confidently if they are trying to move
something more than half their weight.
  • Tyre size – the bigger the child, the bigger the wheel.
  • The look and colour – do check the aesthetics with your child. Does your child like it?

You can find the full details in these articles here and another one here.

Safety measures for children

Always brief your child before you go for a bike ride. You could have a discussion with them about these topics:

  • wear a well fitted helmet.
  • ride with traffic – not against. Obey traffic laws (children less than 10 years old are better on side walks).
  • do check your brakes and lights before you set off – ensure the traffic can see you.
  • have a plan and destination in case you get separated.
  • check parked vehicles – they may suddenly open a door or reverse not seeing you.
  • when passing people, use your bell and alert them in a loud voice.
  • stay alert, look before turning.

There are lots of great places to cycle in Malaysia, from off road to on road, from Putrajaya to Titiwangsa. Check out our next article on cycling… coming soon! So buy your kids a bike and go cycling! For the really adventurous ones, maybe enroll them in a triathlon?!
