A guide to Ampang for families

Kuala Lumpur is spread out and families don’t always venture out to other neighbourhoods because of the distance and the traffic. But we think you should! There is so much to do in various areas of KL and each neighbourhood has some hidden gems. That’s why we’ve decided to make little guides for some of the most family-friendly neighbourhoods and we started with Ampang. Nestled just next door to the posh KLCC, Ampang is more down to earth and has plenty to do on a fun family day out.

Where to eat in Ampang with kids

1. Ra.ft at Lorong Binjai
This bright bistro is particularly great for breakfast and brunch. You can choose to sit outdoors or by the small play area for toddlers. Kids love their pancakes!

2. RGB @ The Bean Hive
A quaint bungalow on a quiet back street with lovely coffee, all day breakfast and good selection of vegetarian options.

3. Veg Fish Farm Thai restaurant in Hulu Langat
Try this for a different dining experience: local seafood served in a original setting by the fish ponds. Read our review here.

4. LINC
A great little mall, home to cafés and a Ben’s supermarket with a play area.

5. The restaurant row
Hidden on the quiet side of Persiaran Ampang are several several restaurants perfect for a family meal. We’ve reviewed Sapore here.

Activities for kids in and around Ampang

7. Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir
Bikes and scooters are allowed here! A shady path around a little lake offers a perfect view across to KLCC.

8. Car free mornings
On every first and third Sunday of the month a route in the city centre is closed off to motor vehicles 7-9am, great for cycling and scooting with kids.

9. Royal Selangor Visitor centre
Tour the pewter factory and make you own piece at the School of Hard Knocks.

10. Kizsport & Gym
This indoor playground is a good one for younger ones – it has an array of climbing equipment, slides and multiple ball pools.

11. Zoo Negara Home to an array of Malaysian animals and of course, the pandas. Now you can see the pandas without having to pay and extra ticket. Bring water and a hat!

12. Volunteer at SPCA
SPCA at Ampang Jaya is always looking for volunteers to help with the dogs and cats. Young children can join with an adult. You can read more about volunteering and the Kitty and Puppy Pawties here.

13. ILHAM Gallery

14. Green Tomato Cafe & myBatik
A little garden café where the kids can try batik painting while the adults have a cuppa.

15. The Hive
The zero-waste store at the Intermark is a great place to shop and talk to kids about all things green.

16. Superpark
This indoor activity park with about 20 activities is great fun for the whole family. Read our review of the Superpark here.

17. Petrosains
A fun science centre with lots of buttons to press at Suria KLCC.
