I'm in the final year of my naturopathy degree and have started thinking seriously about starting up a business next year.

One of the most important things in my line of work is the client/practitioner relationship. I need to ensure that my clients feel comfortable and that they are in an environment that encourages trust and integrity. Therefore, the space that I work out of will have to be well thought out.

Whilst important to ensure this space is professional, I also want it to feel homely and warm. How to achieve this? I believe there are some very simple, and cost effective ways I can make this happen -

Ok, so I'll need a desk, a chair for myself and a couple of others for clients, a bookcase, etc. But why buy ugly laminated "office furniture" when you can get furniture with personality and style at the same price? Look for plush, comfy armchairs, a desk you would use in your home and some great storage for all the bits you don't want clients to see.

Think rugs, cushions, curtains or blinds. Here is your opportunity to add warmth, colour and personality! These are also the things you can change from time to time to freshen up the feel of your space or to keep up with trends. Be careful not to be too overwhelming.

Artwork on the walls will add to the warm, welcoming feeling. Choose something thats fits in with your personality, ties in with your colour scheme, is a decent scale to the wall on which you want to hang it,  and the cardinal rule for art -  always hang at eye level. To be effective, keep other art peices such as vases to a stylish minimum. Forget smiling pictures of the family cluttering up your desk space. You can easily keep them on your computer desktop. And besides, that was so eighties.
