Legally Blonde

Yesterday, I found myself watching this movie from 2001, Legally Blonde starring Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods.

This film is about a girl who was dumped by her boyfriend for another. And because she was so madly in love she went to great lengths to get his boyfriend Warner (Matt Davis). From leaving Los Angeles and moving to the East Coast to study in Harvard, Elle gave her all to win back who she thought was the love of her life, only to find out that no matter how hard she tried, he just wouldn't take her in. Luckily in the end she came to realize that she deserves someone better and as all happy endings go, she found true love at the end of this movie.

This film is nothing new to me, in fact I have seen it for practically more than a dozen times including the sequel. The story line is simple and yet, I keep watching it. I never really understood why but now I know. Somehow this movie reflects what I have been through and that's why I feel some sort of connection towards the character.

In my life there have been several instances of me falling in love and being turned away. I struggle hard to win back the person I love only to find out I was never going to be good enough. Just like Elle, people never took me seriously, I proved them wrong just like she did. Our only difference is aside from gender is that she was able to love again, while I ended up being so tired about love that I gave up on it.

Now at the age of 40, I am no longer thrilled or easily excited with the prospect of love. I guess I did find my love in the end. But it is not the romantic kind. I found the only woman who stood beside me, come hell and high water. Never asking for anything, all she cared about was that I am happy. That woman is my mum!

So in the end my story did have a happy ending after all, not conventional, but something unique. And on its own every bit as wonderful.
