Whether it is through academic excellence or meritorious service she is second to none in today's national politics.

I was 16 years old, when I first became aware of who she was. At that time Senator Santiago was the Commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration and Defortation. Her exemplary performance in said office quickly catapulted her to fame, and instantly became every Filipinos idol. Her sincerity and commitment combined with her courage and intelligence made her a powerful force to be reckoned with in the nation's political arena.

She ran for president and twice it was denied to her. But as a senator her performance was unequalled. The law being a scholar and lawyer was something she cherished. She used it not to oppress but to seek truth and justice. Never did she grew tired nor gave up in the system. Her optimism that one day this country shall soon see the light of progress. That is why instead of circumventing the law, despite trying times she always followed the due process and accorded everyone the chance to legally prove themselves in a court of law.

It may not have been in her pate to become a president. But her work in the Philippine government will forever shine brightly. I am not sad that I casted my vote for her for even if she had lost I am proud that the person I have entrusted my choice is one who fights with reason with the courage of a warm hearted woman - so fat frim yhe savage who wields the power of today's presidency.

Now her battle with cancer has ended. She has entered immortality this morning. And as I write this article my heart is a bit heavy and my eyes teary, for this nation has lost one valiant champion. But just like the rest of those who believe in her, this is not the end. Now it is our turn to inspire the generations to come with the examples she has left behind.
