5 Ways To Protect Your Kids From Garage Hazards

Harmful Household Products That Might Be Hiding In Your Garage

Keeping our children safe from potential dangers is our parenting responsibility. The Garage is often a very unsafe place for toddlers and young children. There people normally store unused items, heavy machinery, vehicles, chemical substances and other equipment.

Disconnect Power Items And Lock Them Away

Anything that uses electrical power should be locked away. Plug locks can be used for this purpose if you are unable to lock them up. Anything with batteries should be stored with them removed if they can’t be locked away.

Car doors should be locked as well to keep kids from venturing into that disaster. Heavy machinery like lawn mowers must be kept in a way that its blades face the wall. Don’t leave household extension cords strung out across the garage either. The floor can get damp and the risk of electric shock is high.

Keep Containers Upside Down And Ladders Horizontally

Large empty containers can pose the risk of trapping kids inside and if the containers are filled, the risk of drowning. It is wise to close the mouth of containers if they are filled or place them upside-down otherwise.

Never place a ladder vertically in your garage. A standing ladder is just begging your kid to climb it, which may result in a falling accident, wounding your child and possibly damaging your vehicle. To avoid this situation, always place the ladder against the wall in a horizontal position.

Keep Dangerous Substances And Chemicals Out Of Reach

People often store pesticides, cleaning products, pool products, paints, car oils and other harmful chemicals in their garages. Keep such items out of the children’s reach by locking them in drawers, cabinets, and closets.

You can also build shelves and keep the products there. WAY at the top. Use air tight containers to store volatile solvents like thinner and keep them out of reach as well.

Do Not Let Children Play With Garage Doors

Garage doors are big and heavy enough to cause severe physical injuries like crushed bones and brain damage. Don’t let them rush under it or grab it.

Automatic garage doors are much safer since they use sensors to detect objects under it. For a manual garage door, the ones with a counterbalance system rather than a coil spring is much safer. Explain your specific situation to places like Sears Garage Doors and they can lead you in the right direction.

Don’t Let Them Enter The Garage To Begin With

A garage is a part of the house that is utterly dangerous for children, you should not let them go there to begin with. Especially alone. You can either secure the door leading to the garage or use a child gate to block them.
