How Losing Can Lead You To Your Biggest Wins

“Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives.” — Tony Robbins

“Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday.” — Wilma Rudolph

“You can’t win unless you learn how to lose.” — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.” — Zig Ziglar

Winning sometimes means Losing temporarily.

And, that’s okay.

However, most people aren’t able to accept this, and it keeps them from winning bigger in life and in their career.

You just can’t win everywhere, in everything, all the time.

I’ll give you a couple of examples from my personal life.

When I wanted to get my first book published, I knew it was going to be very difficult to get an actual publisher, let alone a big name publisher, to publish a book from an unknown author.

I knew it was going to take lots of energy to get my book published.

But, at the time, I was trying to make a lot of other things happen, too.

I had a full-time job and I was trying to start my own business.

But, doing all that at once was not working.

So, I had to put all those other things on pause.

I had to lose ground on all of those other activities, so I could dedicate myself to writing.

Writing became my top priority.

I took a step back in those other areas of my life, and it was tough to accept.

But, the result was that I got the book published by a big name publisher.

Sometimes, you have to lose in order to Win Big.

Your Focus Is A Precious And Finite Resource

It’s impossible to Focus on more than one thing at a time.

This is true in your day-to-day activities, and in the bigger picture of your life.

Research presented by the American Psychological Association shows that “multitasking” is really just rapidly switching between tasks.

Your brain cannot focus on 2 things at once.

And, when you engage in switch-tasking, it takes you longer to complete something and you make more errors.

Shifting between tasks can cost up to 40% of your productive time.

40%!

You are losing out on a huge amount of productive time and energy by not focusing on one thing at a time.

This also applies to you larger goal-setting.

When you split your energy on multiple goals, you will not be able to reach your highest level of success.

And, further to that point, the more specific and focused your goals, the more likely you are to achieve them because you can apply your attention and energy to the exact thing you want to achieve.

One of the most effective goal-setting methods, first introduced in 1981 in Management Review, is the S.M.A.R.T. goal-setting technique.

This method focuses on setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timebound goals.

It’s not the only method for setting goals, but it forces you to get very clear and very focus on what you want to achieve.

So, instead of splitting your attention between too many goals, or diluting your attention on a vague goal, you can apply all your energy towards one big goal.

You need to get hyper-focused on what you want to achieve and leave the rest.

This is the way to reach your biggest wins.

3 Strategies To Create A Big Win By Losing Temporarily

You only have a certain amount of attention.

You can train yourself to expand your focus by limiting other things.

This makes your finite amount of energy and focus more powerful — by intentionally focusing your attention.

You can win with your attention in area XYZ, but that means you’re going to lose in area ABC, temporarily.

That’s just how it is.

Here are 3 steps for you to learn how you can win big by losing temporarily…

1. Define what you want your win to be.

What big win are you trying to achieve?

What are the smaller wins that are getting in the way?

Make a list of priorities.

What is the biggest thing that you can achieve right now with what you have currently, in your hands?

What’s holding you back?

You have limited energy, limited focus, and limited time.

It’s essential that you define and focus on the single big win that you want.

When I wanted to start a business, I saw that there was a certain need within a certain group of people.

I’m running this business currently.

I knew it was going to take a lot of effort to start a business.

For those of you that have tried starting a business, it takes an intense amount of focus to do this.

Starting that business was the big win I chose to focus on.

It meant that I had to say goodbye to a couple of things that brought me small wins.

For example, I used to travel a couple of times a week to speak.

I love speaking, but, I’ve had to say goodbye to that temporarily, in order to implement the things that I need to implement in order to get this business off the ground.

I knew what my focus was and that’s where I put my energy.

2. Accept that losing hurts and focus on the win you want.

It’s not easy to accept a loss.

Your brain and your body are going to fight you.

To really win big, you are going to have to lose on a bunch of other things for awhile.

Accept that this is going to hurt and then move forward.

But, your brain hates losing.

Scientific studies show that there’s almost nothing more painful to our psychology and our physiology than losing something.

But, to win big, you have to lose in other areas.

Be aware that your brain is going to yell at you, it’s going to be mad, it’s going to hurt when you start to lose in some areas.

But remember, you are in control.

Ignore that part of your brain and focus on the win.

If you want big things, you have to take big risks.

And, very often, that big risk means losing something.

Letting go and losing ground on it.

It’s about trading space in that area to gain space somewhere else.

3. Realize that the loss is only temporary.

Here’s the great news.

The loss is only temporary.

You can always come back to the thing you let go of and reinvest in it.

You can always get back what you had before.

Always.

Don’t let people tell you otherwise.

For example, I can start speaking again, if I want.

I can book speaking events.

If I have to rally a little bit to get back up to the level that I was at, that’s okay.

But, I know that I can gain that ground back.

You can do the same thing.

The loss is not permanent, it’s just a choice you have to make in order to win really big.

So, don’t be scared of this temporary loss — you can always get it back.

Ask yourself, what is holding you back?

What are you afraid of losing that’s holding you back from really, really winning?

Stop being afraid and realize the loss is temporary and that it’s the only way you are really going to win big.

Sometimes, you have to lose in order to win. You have to lose, or take steps backwards in one area, in order to make massive gains somewhere else. That is the only way to reach your maximum. Put all your energy and effort into one thing. There are 3 steps for you to learn how you can win big by losing temporarily: define what you want your win to be, accept that losing hurts and focus on the win you want, and realize that the loss is only temporary. Stop wasting time diluting your energy on too many areas, and recognize that winning sometimes means losing temporarily.
