Bullseye! 5 Targeted Skincare Solutions to Add to Your Routine

Caring for your Skin, especially the skin on your face, might sometimes feel like a battle. It can be difficult to find what works best for your skin, and new problems may arise at any time.

Establishing a routine is crucial for maintaining balanced Skincare, though sometimes it’s important to switch or add new products when certain issues crop up. Keep reading to learn how to tailor your skincare routine to address specific concerns and improve your skin’s appearance.

1. Hydroquinone

If you suffer from any type of hyperpigmentation, hydroquinone cream might offer a solution. This medication is most often used for treating melasma, as that has been the focus of its clinical trials. However, it’s regularly prescribed for many kinds of hyperpigmentation, including sun and age spots, uneven skin tone, and sometimes acne scarring.

Hydroquinone is classified as a skin-bleaching cream, though the process isn’t as scary as it sounds. You’re not actually putting a caustic substance on your skin. Hydroquinone works by stopping the body from producing melanin in the area of skin where it’s applied. That serves to lighten the pigmentation over time, thus gaining hydroquinone its designation as a skin-bleaching treatment.

This medicine is prescribed in intervals of three to six months, based on severity of your individual case. Just remember that hydroquinone increases your sensitivity to the sun’s UV rays, so always wear sunscreen and limit time outside.

2. Hyaluronic Acid

You may be seeing mentions of this skincare ingredient everywhere these days, but hyaluronic Acid is no passing fad. Although the name “acid” might make you think it’s a drying solution, this powerful substance actually does the opposite. Praised for its hydrating qualities, hyaluronic acid is often used in anti-aging skincare products.

Produced naturally in the body, hyaluronic acid’s moisturizing properties can be extremely beneficial for lessening the appearance of wrinkles. Not only does it help retain water in your skin, but it also increases elasticity. More flexibility in your facial skin means wrinkles will smooth out over time with repeated hyaluronic acid use.

Conveniently, this ingredient can be found in several types of over-the-counter skincare products. From face washes to serums to lotions, you’ll be able to choose your favorite method of application. Such products tend to be relatively affordable, so that’s an added bonus!

3. Vitamin C

You’ve probably heard all about how beneficial vitamin C is to the body and its immune system. However, did you know it can be a holy grail ingredient for your skin, too? This vitamin packs a punch against toxins and helps improve your skin’s appearance and texture.

There are several skincare issues vitamin C has been proven to combat. Redness or rosacea, hyperpigmentation, dark under-eye circles, wrinkles, and even sun damage can all be addressed with the vitamin. It’s perhaps most popular for its ability to give you a glowy, youthful complexion overall, thanks to its moisturizing and brightening properties. Nor does it hurt that the vitamin’s bacteria-killing capacity serves to ward off blemishes and acne.

Vitamin C skincare products are most commonly available in serum form, although there are lotions and gels out there. However, you need to pay attention when reaching for a product with this ingredient. You’ll want to see that the product contains a form of vitamin C that is both stable and robust. Experts recommend formulations with L-ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, or ascorbyl palmitate.

4. Salicylic Acid

Do you struggle with mild to moderate acne? Salicylic acid might do the trick to stop these annoying blemishes. It can also reduce inflammation and redness that occurs alongside acne.

Used in both prescription and OTC acne products, salicylic acid works by exfoliating the top layers of skin and deep-cleaning pores. When your pores get clogged with dirt, oil, and bacteria, acne can develop. Salicylic acid penetrates deeply into the pores and dissolves the clogs, eliminating blemishes at the source. This process also helps prevent more acne from popping up. Additionally, higher concentrations of the substance can be used as an at-home chemical peel.

Products with salicylic acid are often found over the counter, though some prescription acne medications contain it. Dermatologists say you’re not likely to see results before the six-week mark, so stay patient while using this skincare product.

5. Glycerin

It’s no secret that dry skin is itchy, irritating, and uncomfortable. Particularly dry skin or eczema can even cause pain and redness. One of the top ingredients for moisturizing your skin effectively is glycerin.

Glycerin might make you immediately think of soap, which is a product that commonly uses the substance as a moisturizing agent. However, skincare products have been using it as an ingredient more and more over recent years. This is because glycerin is what’s called a humectant, which is a moisturizer that pulls water into the top layers of skin. This water can be taken from the air around you or from the deeper layers of your skin.

What’s more, a 2016 study named glycerin the most effective humectant, even more than hyaluronic acid. Be careful to use it properly, though, or adverse reactions, including blistering, can occur. Fortunately, this can easily be avoided, as it only happens if you apply pure, undiluted glycerin directly to the face. By using products that simply list glycerin as an ingredient, you’ll know it’s already diluted to a safe level.

Go Easy on Your Skin

Although there are several amazing products with even more amazing ingredients out there, make sure to go easy on your skin. Switching up your routine by adding new products too often can throw your skin for a loop, causing undesirable reactions. While experiencing blemishes or irritation is normal when starting new skincare products, it’s best to switch one product at a time. Taking it slow will allow your skin to ease more comfortably into its new routine.
