Today's Service Sunday is all about TAPS which you can learn more about below from our newest friend, Scarlet! See the bottom of this post to find links to past Service Sundays so you can keep up with ways to give back this holiday season!

Meet Scarlet
My name is Scarlet Woofter and I come from a dedicated military family. I am currently a freshman in college, and I’ve been involved with the non-profit TAPS for about five years now.

A few years ago, while doing some serious google searching for organizations I could volunteer with I stumbled across TAPS.

What Is TAPS?
TAPS is short for Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. TAPS is full of dedicated individuals who spend their time supporting family and friends that have lost a loved one due to military service. Their death can be due to combat, illness, suicide, etc. TAPS is a nationwide program, holding events in many different cities that can be attended by survivors of military deaths.

They believe in peer-to-peer assistance, so they offer small group events that are tailored to the type of loss you are dealing with. Did you lose your loved one to suicide, there is an event just for that. Did you lose your loved one to combat, there is an event just for that. Are you the mother of a deceased service member, there’s an event for that.

How To Help
To be able to continue to support the many people suffering TAPS themselves need support. They have a store that you can buy different TAPS merchandise, everything from sweatshirts and jewelry. The proceeds from purchases go straight back to support TAPS. They also have opportunities for volunteers where you can help staff events.

Here is the link to volunteering opportunities.

They are also always looking for military mentors. Military mentors are paired with children who have suffered the loss of a loved one. Here is the link for more information on what it means to be a military mentor.
