Interview: Bret Welty

Bret Welty is a 25-year veteran blues rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Boise, Idaho.

When did you discover your talent?

Bret Welty: I was 14 when I fell in love with music. I had tried several other instruments before (11!) and nothing ever really clicked. I even took guitar lessons when I was in 2nd grade. But 14 was really it for me, I started playing in a band when I was 15 and haven’t looked back!

What was your initial goal?

Bret Welty: To play in front of people whenever and however I could. I absolutely love the feeling I get connecting with people through music and the thrill of playing live. I love the risk involved; at any moment you can be either brilliant or a total waste of musical space… and that’s why I gravitate towards live, performance music — improvisation always attracts me. That’s where I’m in my element.

When did you begin seriously pursuing your dream?

Bret Welty: Well I’ve always played, but you might say I’ve raised the bar recently in the last year and a half when I decided to record some songs I’ve written over the years and to really try to promote my own music.

What did you want to become when you grew up?

Bret Welty: A rock star! Now my dreams are very similar. I love connecting with people through music. It’s so universal in its reach — it’s a religion we can all agree upon.

What part of your industry do you find most interesting?

Bret Welty: Playing shows and hooking up with other musicians. In fact one of the funnest things I do is get called out to play other people’s shows. I’m an instrumentalist and sometimes one of the best things I can do for fun is be called out to play bass or drums (neither is a main instrument) and not know any of their songs, forcing me to listen hard and find grooves that sound at once ‘hooky’ and purposeful as if they were written and arranged and not improvised at all!

What aspect of your art do you enjoy most?

Bret Welty: The unknown — the unexpected of what can happen live during a show.

What does your typical workday look like?

Bret Welty: The day of a big show I try to wake up as naturally as I can, no alarms, no pressure. If I have stress of any kind I try to deal with it up front and just keep as positive as I can — I want to feed that positivity into my audience. So I read my Bible, play something fun I like on my guitar and then make sure everything I have and need is ready well in advance so I can really just help others get ready by spreading my good mood around.

Is there a specific message you wish to communicate through your art?

Bret Welty: God is good! He’s real! And He loves you! Jesus came to die that we might have LIFE MORE ABUNDANTLY! So yeah, I want people to know and love life as God truly intended it.

What has been your favorite project so far?

Bret Welty: Anything I’m working on right now! Since my work tends to evolve I usually like my most current work best.

I absolutely love the feeling I get connecting with people through music and the thrill of playing live. I love the risk involved; at any moment you can be either brilliant or a total waste of musical space… and that’s why I gravitate towards live, performance music — improvisation always attracts me. That’s where I’m in my element.

How important is feedback to you?

Bret Welty: I would say it is pretty important, however I’m also a self starter and I can honestly say that I’ve gotten by for many years with little or no feedback. Still, I can honestly say it fuels me! At heart, I’m a connector and being around people tends to fire me up, so… pretty important.

Can you think of a communication by a fan you found impressing?

Bret Welty: Oh yeah, I have an old friend who is also a fan who said he has always loved my music and considers me one of the best guitarists he’s ever known. Honestly his encouragement keeps me going often… thanks Ron!

How does your work fit into the direction of the world today?

Bret Welty: The thing people miss, not all people, but I would say the post modern take … what people miss is actually an ancient concept. The Bible would call it the Sabbath. It’s rest! It’s the seventh day of doing nothing and I don’t really mean this in any religious way, what I mean is, there is a certain moment we are to stop and enjoy. We are to find time to rest and I believe my music fits into that category. I want to be a part of people’s lives that rejuvenates and revitalizes them and brings them joy.
I think what is missed is that not all people are very aware and disciplined about it, so we wait until we are bursting, wiped out, crashing and then we rest… but it’s the worst possible rest. It comes from getting a cold or flu or injury or we have to drink alcohol, do drugs, or act out in some way in rebellion to the belief that we do not need rest. It’s kind of strange, isn’t it, that it is an ancient commandment and concept? Even God took a break and wants us to take one too.
I want my work to be a part of that rest. Music should fill us up and refresh us and that’s what I want to do!

What do you do to relax?

Bret Welty: Play music and play with my family. When I can, I hunt and fish and go camping. I love to go shooting and riding my bike!

Do you or have you received support and encouragement from friends, family and colleagues?

Bret Welty: Yes, my wife Kelly is a HUGE supporter of mine, as are my kids. My parents fueled my passion early on by buying me lessons and instruments and my siblings come out to my bigger shows. I can’t say how supported I feel, down to my nieces and nephew!

Have you had times where you thought that your goal is impossible?

Bret Welty: Hmmm, I’ve been working in this industry since I was 14 so in a way simply, no. However making it on my own, you know my own personal career under my own name and not playing for someone else… I’ve only recently been able to consider that a reality! A very challenging thought, however, I’m going to go after it with all my energy!

Is there something you’d like to share so as to encourage people to pursue their dreams?

Bret Welty: Be. Do. Have.

How do you feel about visualization? Have you ever tried it and did it work for you?

Bret Welty: I do it every time before I play. I have too! It’s like the cheapest form of rehearsal and in my mind I do it perfectly every time! It’s a must if you have goals, you have to picture meeting the right people and making it happen like a script. But dig deep first, find out what your most secret dreams are, then visualize.
“Be” that dream, “Do” what you always wanted to do, and then you can enjoy “Having” what you’ve always wanted… but there’s a trick here. It must be from the heart, the Bible calls that your spirit. It has to come from your spirit NOT your soul! (That’s your mind, will, and emotions). Say you want to be rich… that’s mostly your mind. You have to go to a much higher level of energy in order to achieve that, in other words you have to want to help others, end hunger, something that takes a lot of money… it just doesn’t seem to work when it’s all built along selfish ambitions. That, or you end up rich, alone, and miserable.

What has been the most successful venue of promotion of your work?

Bret Welty: Playing live, connecting with other musicians… playing church music.
