Book Review: A Guide to Buying Vitamin Supplements By Nutritionist Gray

The book covers supplemental vitamins A through K and is based on the author’s experience with Nutritional deficiencies.

A connection between nutrition, digestion and holistic health (min-body function) is made.

The book discusses antibiotics as is common when looking at GI tract function, gut flora and overall wellness, as well as chronic constipation, IBS, candidiasis, etc.

The author makes the important observation that nutritional supplements are not magic pills but play a part in a healthy lifestyle.

Various quality seals found on supplement packaging, how to avoid pesticides in supplements, the question of yeast based supplements, etc. are looked at.

Mentions nutrient bio-availability of supplements and quality over quantity when choosing between brands, i.e. don’t buy the cheapest brand and, at the same time, you don’t always get what you pay for.

Pharmaceutical and nutritional supplement incompatibility is mentioned.
General rule: if you consume pharmaceuticals, inc. vaccines, don’t consume herbs and vice versa or at least not without the guidance of an herbalist, naturopath or homeopath.

I disagree on the safety levels of nutrients also found in foods, the standardized 100% recommended daily value. Generally, if you are over 30, consuming only 100% of the daily recommended amounts of essential nutrients in form of Food and supplements combined leads to nutritional deficiencies over time.

The book goes on to explain undesirable ingredients like artificial colors and other unhealthy industrial chemicals found in nutritional supplements (as well as in processed foods) and some of the side effects of such toxins.

Overall, informative.

Book Review: Scoff Nosh Paleo – 151+ Delicious Paleo Recipes For Modern Day “Hunter” Gatherers” By Oliver Michaels
Katarina Nolte ¦ 01/06/2015

“Is man the sickest animal on the planet?”

SCOFF NOSH PALEO: 151 + Delicious Paleo Recipes for Modern Day “HUNTER GATHERERS” explains what the Paleo diet is, the benefits of the Paleo diet, the Paleo diet in relation to digestion and which food constitute the Paleo diet.

The types of recipes included are:

◦ Paleo on the go recipes
◦ Breakfast recipes
◦ Beverages
◦ Poultry recipes
◦ Beef recipes
◦ Pork recipes
◦ Seafood recipes
◦ Salads
◦ Sauces
◦ Dips
◦ Desserts

All of the recipes are free of wheat, gluten, grains, dairy, sugar and legumes.

The book talks about problems caused by antinutrients found in grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and covers the following health issues:

◦ Bloating
◦ Leaky gut syndrome
◦ Diet related autoimmune diseases
◦ Chronic inflammation
◦ Skin problems
◦ Weight problems
◦ Protein malabsorption
◦ Nutritional deficiencies
◦ Metabolic syndrome

The author mentions industrial agriculture, animal factories, food in depth, CAFOs and chemical residues in food and the environment.

“I am saying buy the highest quality of protein you can afford.”

Disagree on autoimmunity: the body is not ‘confused’ and attacking its own tissue. Instead, the body attempts to dispose of tissue damaged by candida overgrowth before that same tissue turns cancerious. Industrial chemicals, antinutirents, leaky gut, candidiasis and deficiencies in friendly gut bacteria, digestive enzymes and other vital nutrients go hand in hand.

The author explains the nutritional difference between wild/pastured animal products and conventional industrial animal products.

Good advice on transitioning from an unhealthy to a healthy diet.

The author believes in the hypothesis that it was meat specifically that accelerated the evolutionary human brain growth.

Again, a higher protein intake seems to have played a role, but it is not known whether the source of this increased protein intake came from land animals, fish and seafood or insects and eggs, or a little bit of all of the above, raising the total protein intake overall.

This point is important because for much of our existence we have been scavengers, dining on leftover prey caught by top predators.

Turtles are endangered and should not be consumed by humans. There is no need for us to eat turtles.

Certain items like balsamic vinegar and canned foods are clearly not paleo.

Some of the individual recipes include:

Grain Free creackers
◦ Grain free breat
◦ Grain free banana bread
◦ Grain free chips
◦ Grain free muffins
◦ Grain free cookies
◦ Grain free cake
◦ Grain free pancakes
◦ Grain free doughnuts
◦ Grain free porridge
◦ Scrambled eggs
◦ Omelletes
◦ Chicken nuggets
◦ Roasted chicken
◦ Baked chicken
◦ Organ meat recipes
◦ Sausage patties
◦ Sausage
◦ Slow cooker/crock pot recipes
◦ Beef curry
◦ Stir fry
◦ Stuffed goose
◦ Roasted pheasant
◦ Roast beef
◦ Paleo chili
◦ Lamb roast
◦ Carrot ‘fries’
◦ Fruit salads
◦ Teas
◦ Chicory root ‘coffee’
◦ Cider
◦ Lemonade
◦ Juices

There are English, Italian, South African and Caribbean recipes.

One of the dishes combines meat from different animals – a bad idea digestively speaking.

Overall, phenomenally rich in solid nutritional information.

“Candida secretes acid that can alter pH (acid/alkaline balance). It also grows very long roots called rhizoids, which actually puncture the mucosal lining of the intestine. When it becomes damaged, we develop a condition called Leaky Gut Syndrome… When undigested food particles penetrate the bowel wall and enter the bloodstream, the body views them as foreign invaders and makes antibodies (chemical bullets) against them. This can result in the development of food allergies or sensitivities, and ultimately autoimmune disease.”

And just because the brand name or product name sounds like it’s good for weight loss (Weight Watchers, Skinny Cow, etc.), don’t assume the food is lower in sugar.”
