Interview: Mary DeWeber

Today I’m interviewing Mary Deweber, the author of Their Tangled Hearts and Her Shattered Heart.

When did you discover your talent?

Mary DeWeber: I’ve always been a “storyteller,” but I didn’t realize I could write until 2003 when I couldn’t get away from a story and had to write it down.

What was your initial goal?

Mary DeWeber: I thought that if I wrote a short story I would be able to get it out of my system. The story didn’t go away, instead it expanded into a novel.

When did you begin seriously pursuing your dream?

Mary DeWeber: In 2014.

What did you want to become when you grew up?

Mary DeWeber: All my friends wanted to be doctors, singers, or actors. I just wanted to be a wife and mom. I’ve been married for 40 years and have 5 children and 14 grandchildren.

What part of your industry do you find most interesting?

Mary DeWeber: I love designing my covers!

What aspect of your art do you enjoy the most?

Mary DeWeber: I find the creative process fascinating. It’s like watching a movie in my mind, only better, because I know the characters thoughts and emotions.

Is there a specific message you wish to communicate through your art?

Mary DeWeber: I am a Christian Romance writer. My main theme is always forgiveness.

What has been your favorite project so far?

Mary DeWeber: My first book, Their Tangled Hearts is my favorite. It’s what started this journey.

How important is feedback to you?

Mary DeWeber: Extremely important! I appreciate honest critique.

Can you think of a communication by a fan you found impressing?

Mary DeWeber: “Reading is a way of life – My Review: Every once in a while, I like to read a book like this. It was easy, not too dramatic, and the characters were in a very realistic setting. The story itself was down to earth and not like a lot of books are these days and the love story was pure and very sweet.
Emma Winters is a young woman who knows tragedy. At her age, early twenties, she has experienced heartache to no end. When she was a little girl, both of her parents died in a car accident and she was left to be raised by her godparents, “Doc” and Martha Linden. They raised her and loved her like she was their own daughter.
But, life happens and they couldn’t shelter Emma from everything. One night, Emma had a horrifying experience that would change her for the rest of her life and make her shield her heart from anything, and anyone, who wanted in.
She was a beautiful young woman with so much going for her, she was a songwriter and was very good at it! She chose to write under a different name to keep anyone from knowing it was her. So she uses that as an outlet for her feelings and her songs are sung by famous Country music stars.”

How does your work fit into the direction of the world?

Mary DeWeber: With the rise in Christianity today I fell that there is a need for quality Christian entertainment. My books deal with difficult situations without being graphic in nature.

What do you do to relax?

Mary DeWeber: Curl up with a good book.

Have you received support and encouragement from friends, family and colleagues?

Mary DeWeber: Everyone has been very supportive! I blush every time someone tells me how much he or she enjoys my books.

Have you had times where you thought your goal is impossible?

Mary DeWeber: Absolutely! I wrote Their Tangled Hearts in 2003 and Her Shattered Heart soon after. I researched how to get them published, but they didn’t fit into the guidelines that the publishers laid out. I got discouraged and, literally put them on a shelf for 11 years. When my friend, Steve Long, asked me to let him see what he could do about it, I agreed. With much prayer, I placed my manuscript in his hands. Imagine my joy the first time I held a finished copy of my book. I cried.

Is there something you would like to share so as to encourage people to pursue their dreams?

Mary DeWeber: Don’t give up!
