Book Review: SUGAR: Sugar Detox, Beat Sugar Addiction, Overcome Sugar Cravings, Lose Weight, Increase Energy And Feel Great By Nathaly Sandford

SUGAR: Sugar Detox, Beat Sugar Addiction,Overcome Sugar Cravings, Lose Weight, Increase Energy And Feel Great! includes a freebie and begins with the US sugar consumption statistics noting that sugar has turned out to be a highly addictive substance and the major cause of excess body fat.

We learn about the health disadvantages of white sugar, sugar in the media and the availability of sugar.

The reasons for quitting sugar are covered along with obesity facts and figures.

The book focuses on white sugar, HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), artificial sweeteners and flour and their association with contemporary disease like heart disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, dementia, diabetes, premature agin, and cancer.

Other details include:

– Specific techniques one should utilize for a successful sugar detox
– Less known sugars and hidden sources of sugar
– How to quit sugar going cold turkey
– What to expect at certain points
– How to prepare for the sugar detox
– Sugar detox program steps
– What to eat during the sugar detox program
– How to manage cravings
– Which foods, herbs and nutrients are helpful
– The benefits of a sugar detox
– Additional tips and tricks for best results

The book‘s focus is limited to quitting refined sugar, HFCS and artificial sweeteners. Healthier, natural sugar alternatives are permitted. This is somewhat perplexing because while healthier, any added sugar is still added sugar. Added sugar is not necessary for human survival and good health and does lead to fat gain and other problems.

At the same time, quitting white sugar, HFCS and artificial sweeteners does make a world of difference and can be used as the first major step in one’s path to wellness.

The author goes on to talk about common beverages and the sugars found in them, how to handle parties and restaurant visits and what types of snacks to consume.

The final chapter is called ‘Healing your spirit’ and breaks down the connection between sugar addiction and emotions. The author treats sugar as the addictive substance that it is and how important emotional well being is in this detox process.

We learn how to destress, relaxation methods, putting time aside to wind down, relaxing habits, meditation, etc.

The freebie at the end of the book is a recipe booklet that I’m not too crazy about. There is a discrepancy between the great recommendation in the main book and the booklet recipes.

Overall, excellent, but I’d remove the freebie from the main book.

“The food industry has contaminated the American food supply with added sugar to “sell more product” and thereby uphold their Wall Street mandate to increase profits. Of the 600,000 food items in the American grocery store, 80 percent have been spiked with added sugar; and the industry uses 56 other names for sugar on the label. They know when they add sugar, you buy more. And because you do not know you’re buying it, you buy even more.”

Book Review: The Addictocarb Diet: Avoid the 9 Highly Addictive Carbs While Eating Anything Else You Want By Bruce Roseman M.D.
Katarina Nolte ¦ 07/17/2015

The author discusses food addiction from a standpoint of food as a potentially addictive substance.

Weight loss myths and rules are covered with a focus on particularly addictive types of carbohydrate rich foods.

We learn how to get rid of the addiction to these foods by going through what the author calls the addictocarb rehab.

Gluten and lactose are covered, as well as vegetarianism.

Other details included are:

– How to deal with fast food while on the Addictocarb Diet
– What types of snacks to consume
– The health benefits of the Addictocarb diet plan
– Addictocarb diet recipes
– Addictocarb food alternatives

The Addictocarb Diet: Avoid the 9 Highly Addictive Carbs While Eating Anything Else You Want includes a chapter about diabetes and its connection to addictocarbs.

The author explains the biochemical and epigenetic aspects of the high glycemic index carbohydrate addiction pathway and talks about new findings in addiction neuroscience.

“Not only are you what you eat but your grandchildren also are what you eat!”

The book goes on to explain the global obesity epidemic and how and why ddictocarbs kill.

The author is a self admitted food addict, who struggled for years until he developed, tested and optimized the Addictocarb diet which changed things for the better for him and his patients.

Interestingly, the author is of the opinion that added sugar is not the worst of the worst even though it is sugar that has been scientifically proven to be more addictive than cocaine.

It is also rather perplexing that despite more people being addicted to pharmaceuticals than street drugs, doctors rarely mention it.

The Addictocarb Diet is written in a conversational style and describes the evolution of the Addictocarb diet, health and disease pertaining to dietary habits and choices, and the various popular diets that turned out to be ineffective.

Overall a great concept, ideal for overweight and obese people as well as anyone who can’t live without unhealthy carbs and sugars. Also, people who eat compulsively and/or have a tendency to overeat can benefit from this protocol.

What I disagree with is exercise. The author mentions swimming and other very light exercises as examples of why, in his experience, exercise does not help you lose weight and/or keep the weight down.

Whether you are looking to build lean muscle, lose fat specifically, or lose weight while dieting, the only way this will work is if you take advantage of resistance exercise. Without strenuous exercise, there is no weight loss without dietary restriction. Period.

Resistance training, when done properly and consistently, strengthens muscles which, in turn, changes body chemistry favorably for those looking to get a lean physique. Metabolism is accelerated, fat burn is made possible (even when resting), and bones are strengthened, as are joints and other connective tissues (including the skin). And, very importantly, the mood is lifted which makes behaviors that require a disciplined attitude considerably easier.

And, finally, exercise for the sake of weight loss is something that most people don’t stick with for very long. Exercise should be a fun, pleasurable activity, which is why it is so important to actively search and carefully select the types of exercise one enjoys and benefits from.

So, if swimming or running or whatever is not your thing, don’t do it. Instead, find something that works for you. Ideally, something where you can observe noticeable progress; progress, that is, that is not limited to weight loss.

The basis of the Addictocarb diet program is the handling and elimination of cravings which is why the approach is one normally found in programs that focus on addictions to controlled substances.

This is great what with all the fuss about suggested restrictions on high calorie junk food and beverages consumed in massive amounts and at great expense to the health of individuals and the bottom line of taxpayers.

Viewing junk food and beverages in general (and not just the addictocarbs covered in this book) based on how they influence the consumers’ behavior and health would require cultural changes like buying your food at the local farmer’s market and cooking your food at home from scratch.

The Addictocarb diet consists of 3 stages and is a lifestyle diet to be followed for life.

“In society as a whole, food addiction far outweighs drug and alcohol addiction in its health consequences, and we all pay for this in our taxes, health insurance premiums, and quality of life.”

“Diseases of insulin resistance are frequently referred to as “diseases of civilization” (5, 78, 79) and include: obesity, coronary heart disease (CHD), type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia [elevated serum triacylglycerols, small-dense, LDL cholesterol and reduced HDL cholesterol]. It is likely that the metabolic syndrome may extend to other chronic illnesses and conditions that are widely prevalent in Western societies, including: myopia (80), acne (81), gout (79), polycystic ovary syndrome, epithelial cell cancers (breast, colon, and prostate), male vertex balding, skin tags and acanthosis nigricans (78). Diseases of insulin resistance are rare or absent in hunter-gatherer and other less westernized societies living and eating in their traditional manner (5, 21, 82, 83).”
