Book Review: 13 Stolen Girls: A Layla Remington Mystery By Gil Reavill

13 Stolen Girls is a murder mystery novel which centers around the disappearance of a hit indie film star, Tarin Mistry (a.k.a. Bethlehem Gunion). Her disappearance is followed by the discovery of a body in the Malibu hills presumed to be hers.

The main character, Detective Layla Remington, investigates the case and comes across similar cases which lead her to the rich and famous and a network of perverts who kidnap young wannabe actresses and then drug and torture them to death.

The story is a real page turner, full of twists and turns and impeccably written. It unravels in stages like pieces of a puzzle coming together bit by bit until the end, which itself, carries the final surprise.

There is a good and steady dose of action and suspense as well as outright horror (or, maybe, terror would be a more appropriate word).

Detective Layla Remington is a strong, independent and ambitious woman with a heart and the perpetrators she’s chasing are completely deranged degenerates.

“Consent is such a slippery concept.”

The popularity of sadomasochistic (so-called) erotica is an important part of the story. We live in strange times indeed. Sadomasochistic perversions have gone mainstream, sadomasochistic pop ‘literature’ can be found among bestselling books and movies (and according to mainstream media is consumed feverishly by women), domestic abuse statistics are higher than ever, and one if four Women is on psychoactive ‘happy’ pills. Go figure. Oh, and we live in a ‘post-feminist’ world because women can be anything but honest with themselves and one another, never mind society as a whole.

Overall, awesome story telling. It’s one of those rare ficiton stories that have just the right combination of all the elements needed to make it memorable.

Ending the Silence

“We don’t get mainstream narratives inviting us to identify with women who like to dominate in bed, or mass-marketed portrayals of women of color and queer women as sexual heroines in control of their choices – likely because that would create more “free will” for women than the media bosses are really comfortable with.”

Movie Review: Skin Trade (2015)
Katarina Nolte ¦ 10/19/2015

Skin Trade (2015) stars Dolph Lundren (The Expendables 3), a New Jersey Police detective, who together with an FBI agent, played by Michael Jay White (Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown), a Thai police detective played by Tony Jaa (Furious 7), and an informer played by Celina Jade (Arrow), takes down a drug trafficking ring Crime Boss played by Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy).

The story begins in Southeast Asia where young women are drugged, kidnapped, addicted to drugs, gang raped and then cleaned and dressed up and sold to the highest bidder who then trafficks them through Europe into North America. The young victims are transported in shipping containers like manufactured goods and then thrown into forced prostitution.

Clearly the drug and human trade go hand in hand.

The New Jersey police, together with the FBI, conducts a raid in which the Serbian-Russian crime boss is captured and arrested. Thanks to diplomatic immunity he manages to leave the country and is suspected to be hiding somewhere in Southeast Asia.

“When they stop buying, I stop selling.”

The New Jersey police detective’s family is murdered in retribution. He survives, recovers and goes on a killing spree in search for the escaped crime boss.

Meanwhile in Bangkok, Thai police try to destroy the Asian side of the trafficking ring with the help of a female informant.

We are reminded that children are sold into the slave trade by their own parents at a price of $1,000/kid and that general corruption among authorities and the rich and powerful persists.

The ending might be indicative of a continuation of the story.

Overall, an action packed crime drama with a good story line and just the right amount of martial arts fight scenes.
