TV Show Review: Black Mirror

The Netflix series Black Mirror is described as a high tech type of the Twilight Zone. I would add The Hunger Games to the comparison when it comes to what people do to survive, obtain power and keep up with life in our technology dependent way of life.

Each Episode is a stand alone story with a unique message presented in a subtle manner. It’s the type of media that requires distraction free, observant consumption.

Episode 1 – The National Anthem

In the first story a UK princess is kidnapped and the kidnappers want the prime minister to engage sexually with a pig on live TV. This gives him the choice of being a hero by (potentially) saving her and preserving his position of power or refusing to negotiate with the terrorists and losing everything. Either path would cause him to lose his dignity.

Episode 2 – Fifteen Million Merits

The second story is one in which the only energy source is that produced by people who spend their lives pedaling on stationary bicycles. The only ways out of this are to a. become an entertainer (singer or dancer) or b. a porn star. Eventually, a guy finds a way to get on stage and speak his mind and express his frustration about the situation. He, at first, comes across as a revolutionary, a one of a kind rebel who is heard by the masses. For a moment, we are mislead into thinking that this will change everything, that a type of victory has been achieved in favor of the (pedaling) masses. We assume that that was that episode’s message. It is the final shot in the final scene accompanied by a song, however, that carries the story’s message. If you pay very close attention, you’ll catch it. It’s all about prioritization. We can choose to find our place in the artificial hierarchy invented by humans or we can choose freedom in nature which gives us everything that is real.

Episode 3 – The Entire History of You

The third story is about high tech gear that people use to hold onto and re-review and/or relive past experiences and memories with absolute precision and go on blaming and even suing family and friends for any resulting pain and suffering. Some of the interesting scenes include one in which instead of the guy’s id or passport being checked, all of his recent memories (all of which are auto-recorded by default), every single thing he had done up until the present moment, are checked, analyzed, recorded and stored inside the airport computer. Also, a couple, while having passionless sex, each hold a button wirelessly connected to a microchip in their heads, causing themselves to mentally relive memories of passion filled sex they had experienced early in the relationship. Every little thing in people’s lives is analyzed and discussed ad nauseum. People use their ultra thin smart TVs not to watch the usual ‘programming’ but instead replay specific events from their pasts in an obsessive and excessively self-absorbed manner. Above all, there are no secrets whatsoever and a million reasons to argue all day long. And so, again, we are reminded that there is a poignant message to be gained from each episode in the series.

Episode 4 – Be Right Back

The fourth story goes even further into the potentially realistic high tech abstraction. A woman’s husband dies in an accident and she ends up buying a walking, talking, thinking, sexually performing (politely put) AI replica doll whose data is based on her deceased husband’s vast online history. If the day comes when women can own such a thing and program it after their favorite romance novel stud/ess… LOL!

Episode 5 – White Bear

The fifth episode wasn’t overly poignant. A woman wakes up with no memory of who she is, gets out of the house and notices that everyone in the neighborhood is filming her every move. Some people chase her with a shotgun. A friend helps her to safety. Things are not as they seem, etc.

Episode 6 – The Waldo Moment

The sixth episode is about a cartoon figure which wins the local majority vote and becomes a world famous symbol of hope and change while everything stays the same.

Episode 7 – White Christmas

The seventh episode is full of twists and turns and, most of all, surprises. In terms of futuristic high tech, it takes us a couple of steps further. We learn what the previously introduced technologies could be used for by law enforcement, private companies and individuals. This one is the last currently available episode I’m aware of and it consists of multiple intertwined stories and stories within stories, giving us a deeper glimpse into what the world and daily life could look like in the very near future. The episode starts very innocently and gradually becomes twisted and rather complex.

Overall, great work, very impressive and definitely thought provoking.
