Action for M.E.

What they do: Create a greater awareness and understanding of M.E. and ensure those affected by the condition get the care and Support they need.

Candis Big Give project: The money raised will go towards providing vital help, information and advice to those affected by M.E. by funding support services for both children and adults with M.E. – including telephone helplines, a website, useful resources and a peer-support and volunteer programme. It will also support researchers and research activity into M.E, which currently has no cure and very little understanding around how to treat it.

Action For Stammering Children (ASC)

What they do: Offer specialist help and support to transform the lives of young people who stammer and their families.

Candis Big Give project: To provide over 600 phone calls by trained speech and language therapists to young people with stammers, to respond to their concerns and provide them with guidance, information, support and much-needed reassurance.

Fundraising target: £20,000

The Brain Tumour Charity

What they do: Fund pioneering research, raise awareness and provide support for everyone affected by brain tumours.

Candis Big Give project: The money raised will help the charity offer vital emotional support to families, patients and carers who have been devastated by a brain tumour diagnosis, by funding services including provision and training of a dedicated support team, a comprehensive suite of informative printed resources and an online chat resource where people can easily access support.

Cancer Research UK

What they do: Help to save lives through funding vital research into cancer and its treatment.

Candis Big Give project: To find fresh ways of tackling cancer through the charity’s Pioneer Award, which funds innovative and unique ideas that could revolutionise the current understanding of cancer and generate new knowledge on how to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease more effectively.

Canine Partners

What they do: Transform the lives of people with disabilities by partnering them with free-of-charge assistance dogs, who are specially trained to meet each individual’s needs.

Candis Big Give project: To increase the number of assistance dogs available, so the charity can re-open the waiting list to new applicants and help to improve more lives. The money raised will go towards the charity’s breeding programme, the training of volunteers who will train the puppies from a young age and completing the kennel facilities at its Midland Training Centre.

Chailey Heritage Foundation

What they do: Help children and young people with complex physical disabilities and health needs to fulfil their potential by providing education, care and transition services.

Candis Big Give project: To give all the pupils and young people supported by the charity access to Eyegaze technology, which will allow children with complex physical needs to use computers to learn and interact with the world around them through eye movement alone. The money raised will go towards the purchase of 20 Eyegaze devices and the appropriate software, accessories and computers needed to use the technology.

The Children’s Trust

What they do: Deliver rehabilitation, education and community services to children with brain injury.

Candis Big Give project: To provide specialist play activities for children with acquired brain injury and neurodisability from across the UK who are being cared for at the charity’s specialist site in Surrey. These play activities will support the children with their recovery by helping them to develop and relearn physical, cognitive, social and emotional skills, while also giving them the opportunity to express their feelings and have fun during a difficult time.

The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity

What they do: Raise funds to benefit the 30,000 individual patients each year being treated for or recovering from cancer at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, which is a UK leader in the delivery of cancer care.

Candis Big Give project:The money raised will go towards a bone marrow transplant suite at its new cancer hospital in the centre of Liverpool, helping to improve the care of those diagnosed with blood cancer who require a bone marrow transplant. The suite will offer the most advanced equipment and resources and also ensure the highest level of comfort as patients may spend weeks to months in these suites.

Diabetes UK

What they do: Work in partnership with healthcare professionals, people with diabetes and many others to drive change and find and share knowledge, to prevent more people developing this potentially life-threatening condition and also to support people living with diabetes.

Candis Big Give project: To fund research to improve care, find a cure and prevent Type 1 diabetes, a serious life-long condition that can cause serious complications.

Dingley’s Promise

What they do: Deliver support to children under five with additional needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families.

Candis Big Give project: The money raised will go towards the charity’s Learn Through Play project, which will support educational development of children under five with additional needs and disabilities. The charity will provide nine three-hour sessions a week across the school year at all three of its centres at Reading, Wokingham and Newbury, using specialist early intervention methods to support children to go on to access mainstream education where possible and help give them the best start in life.

Dreamflight

What they do: Raise money to take children with a serious illness or disability on holiday to Orlando, Florida.

Candis Big Give project: To send 20 children with a serious illness or disability on a ten-day trip to Orlando. The money will cover all costs for the trip, including travel and food, accommodation, medical expenses, entry to theme parks, a dolphin swim and reunion parties, giving them a much-needed opportunity to have fun, build their confidence and develop lifelong friendships.

The Jessie May Trust

What they do: Provide free professional nursing care to terminally ill children in their own homes and offer practical and emotional support to the whole family.

Candis Big Give project: To reach more families in its operating areas who are not currently supported. The charity aims to increase its number of referrals this year by an additional 11 children, helping to offer them and their families a lifeline through its respite and palliative care support, which includes nursing care, advice and support, advocacy, support family days out, long-term bereavement support and highly intensive, specialist end-of-life care.

Location: Bristol and the surrounding areas

Joss Searchlight

What they do: Support those affected by childhood cancer by offering emotional and practical support for families and granting wishes for children.

Candis Big Give project: To develop the charity’s ROCK (Reaching Out to Cancer Kids) project, which provides interactive online training for schools to promote an understanding of childhood cancer and ensure participants develop confidence, skills and strategies to support children with cancer and their families.

Location: South East England

Julia’s House – The Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospices

What they do: Provide respite care to children with life-limiting conditions in their hospice and in children’s homes across Dorset and Wiltshire.

Candis Big Give project: To improve the quality of life of seriously ill children by ensuring they have access to high-quality play. The money raised will cover the salaries of two specialist members of the play team, as well as costs for specialist toys and sensory equipment, which will allow the children to create special moments, express themselves, eliminate anxieties and phobias, have fun and meet their potential, no matter how unwell they may be.

Kidney Care UK

What they do: Provide support to kidney patients and work to improve health and social care services for patients, their families and carers.

Candis Big Give project: To transform the lives of young kidney patients aged 9-30, by funding unique activity breaks for them to attend. These breaks offer young people respite from the day to day challenges of living with kidney disease, a chance to make friends and share experiences, support on self-managing medication and treatments and the chance to have fun, gain confidence and develop new skills while taking part in a variety of activities.

Langdon

What they do: Empower people with learning disabilities to live independently and achieve their personal ambitions through the provision of support, care, help and guidance.

Candis Big Give project: To encourage women with learning disabilities – who are at increased risk of being overweight – to get active to improve their health and well-being. The money raised will help the charity to provide 40 weekly dance sessions run by a Dance and Movement Therapist to its 30 female members, enabling them to get fit while having fun.

Little Gate Farm

What they do: Support adults with learning disabilities into paid work and independence through work training at the farm and run projects for children with learning disabilities and autism during school holidays.

Candis Big Give project: To support more adults and children with learning disabilities and autism. The money raised will help the charity to provide work-related training and job coaching to ten adults with learning disabilities, helping to support them into paid work, as well as to provide a holiday club for 30 children with additional needs at its rural farm setting.

The Lullaby Trust

What they do: Offer specialist support to bereaved parents when a baby dies suddenly and unexpectedly, raise awareness of sudden infant death and provide expert advice on safer sleep for babies.

Candis Big Give project: To support bereaved families coping with the sudden and unexpected death of a seemingly healthy baby or young child, which affects approximately ten families every week. The money raised will help the charity to support families through this difficult time with a unique range of services, including professional phone, email and social media and a peer-support befriending service.

my AFK (formerly Action For Kids)

What they do: Create independence, provide opportunities and offer support to disabled children, young people and their families.

Candis Big Give project: The money raised will help the charity provide one disabled child or young person a week with the mobility equipment they need to gain maximum independence and make the most of their lives.

Fundraising target: £12,000

National Migraine Centre

What they do: Provide accessible treatment to all sufferers of migraine and other primary headaches, educate healthcare professionals and undertake research to improve knowledge and treatment.

Candis Big Give project: To hire, train and support another headache specialist doctor for two sessions per week for one year, to treat an additional 450 patients suffering from severe migraine and headaches and help meet the increasing demand for this service.

Over The Wall

What they do: Provide free Therapeutic Recreation camps for children and families affected by serious and life-limiting illnesses.

Candis Big Give project: To run three Sibling Camps across the UK in 2019 to help the often sidelined siblings of children with serious or life-limiting illness to build their confidence and self-esteem, increase resilience, have fun enjoying new challenges and activities, get a break from the pressures and constraints of life at home and meet other children who face the same challenges.

Reach Learning Disability

What they do: Provide informal courses and social activities to people with learning disabilities in Nottinghamshire, helping them to improve their quality of life.

Candis Big Give project: To enable adults with learning disabilities to reduce their risk of diabetes – which recent data indicates is nearly double the rate of the general population – or better manage an existing diabetes diagnosis by making small, sustainable changes. The project will provide 100 adults with learning disabilities with fun, engaging activities delivered by qualified staff, to encourage them to be more active and eat more healthily and support them in being able to find vital advice and support.

Location: Nottinghamshire

Rennie Grove Hospice Care

What they do: Provide care and support for patients and families affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, which give patients the choice to be cared for in their own homes.

Candis Big Give project: To provide the 24/7 care and support needed to make it possible for babies and children to receive end-of-life care at home, surrounded by their families. The money raised will fund 85 days of nursing care from a qualified specialist Children’s Hospice at Home Nurse, who will be available at any time of the day or night to provide medical care for the child and support for the family.

Location: Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire

Rett UK

What they do: Support families with children with Rett syndrome, which is a severe life-limiting genetic neurological disorder.

Candis Big Give project: To recruit, train and employ six Regional Communication Champions who will support parents and carers of children with Rett syndrome in using augmentative and alternative forms of communication (AAC) with the person they care for. They will facilitate communication-focused coffee mornings – which offer an opportunity to problem solve, ask questions and get help with developing personalised resources – and facilitate local group outings where parents, carers and the person with Rett syndrome can practice their communication skills.

What they do: Provide practical advice and emotional support to disabled people and their families, and campaign to change attitudes and create a society where all disabled people enjoy equality and fairness.

Candis Big Give project: To run the charity’s Best Start in Life programme, which helps give disabled children the best start in life by equipping families with the tools and emotional strength they need to help their child fulfil their potential. The programme offers specialist sleep support to help counteract the poor sleep patterns common in families affected by disability, helps to build parents’ resilience through mentoring and support from mentors with lived experience of disability and provides parenting classes to help parents develop skills and confidence and build a network of support.

Sebastian’s Action Trust

What they do: Offer emotional and practical support and free specialist respite holidays to seriously ill children and their families.

Candis Big Give project: To provide families of seriously ill children with dedicated, practical outreach support in the local community, in hospital, in the home and at its new Family Outreach & Respite Centre, The Woodlands. The services offered will include financial advice, well-being activities such as art and music therapy, counselling and a calendar of events and activities to promote social inclusion, helping to reduce many of the pressures and challenges families face when caring for a seriously ill child.

St Peter & St James Hospice

What they do: Provide specialist care to people who are terminally ill, helping them to live as well as possible with their illness and offering support to families to help them cope in difficult times.

Candis Big Give project: To allow patients to be cared for and to live well in their own homes towards the end of their lives and die in their preferred place, in familiar and comfortable surroundings, through the help of Clinical Nurse Specialists who will provide expert advice, care and comfort during this often difficult time.

Fundraising target: £50,000

Tommy’s

What they do: Save babies’ lives during pregnancy and birth by funding research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth and providing pregnancy health information to parents.

Candis Big Give project: The money raised will help the charity to improve women’s mental health during pregnancy. It will develop a digital version of its Pregnancy and Post-birth Wellbeing Plan, which is a tool to improve self-management of mental well-being, as well as launch a campaign to promote the tool to those at risk of mental illness, which affects one in five women during pregnancy.

Tyneside And Northumberland Mind

What they do: Offer tailored help and support to people with mental health diagnosis or problems across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.

Candis Big Give project: To reduce some of the challenges and isolation experienced by people with mental health problems through the charity’s Safe Space programme, which delivers a tailored programme of peer and professional support, including one-to-one counselling. The programme will help participants gain new skills and knowledge about how to cope with and improve their mental health, as well as giving them the opportunity to increase their social networks, develop friendships and improve their confidence and self-esteem.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance

What they do: Provide an air ambulance service to the people of Wiltshire and nearby.

Candis Big Give project: The money raised will go towards a SIMBODIES clinical patient simulation system, which uses true-to-life manikins that react just as a person would when they are seriously injured or experiencing trauma. The system will help enable its Critical Care Paramedics to further develop their specialist skills by practicing advanced clinical procedures in a safe and controlled environment, helping them tosave more lives.
