How to Create a Winter Capsule Wardrobe With 11 Fashion Staples

I know all the magazines are showing us what’s new for Spring. And I could not be more excited for the new season. But in most parts of the world, it’s still freezing! So I thought it would be a perfect time to show you how to create a Winter Capsule Wardrobe.

I already blogged about the fashion staples I wear year-round. So here are the the fashion staples that I wear in heavy rotation for cold weather. The great part about thinking about them now is you can get most of these timeless pieces on sale… and wear them for many winters to come.

Winter FASHION STAPLES

  1. Neutral Coat

  2. Black Turtleneck

  3. Sweater Dress

  4. Over the Knee boots

  5. Leather pants

  6. Neutral chunky sweater

  7. Ankle booties

  8. Black Jeans

  9. Long sleeve layering tee

  10. Black tights

  11. Chic beanie

Ok, now that we have the list, let’s talk specifics on how to create a winter capsule wardrobe. I want to share which winter staples I splurge on and why. And not to worry, I listened to your suggestions and I’m offering more affordable alternatives even if I splurged.

#1: Neutral coat

As much as I love a statement coat, they are just that: statements. You can’t wear them year after year. But a neutral coat is a classic piece you can wear forever.

My favorite color neutral coat is camel. It goes with black, brown and just about every color in the rainbow. Of course, black is also a classic neutral staple. Other neutral coat colors I love? Gray, blush and leopard. I know leopard is also a bit of a statement but the print really goes with everything!

Coats are definitely a winter fashion staple worth the splurge. Fabric is super important, in order to keep you warm as is fit. Sometimes I’ll get my coats tailored to ensure the perfect fit on my more petite frame.

#2: Black Turtleneck

I wear my black turtleneck non stop in winter months. I did an IGTV video with 10 ways to wear a black turtleneck because the styling possibilities are endless!

If you only purchase one black turtleneck, I recommend a fitted one. That way you can wear it to the office, date night and layered for casual weekends. All the ones below are under $100.

#3: Sweater Dress

The Sweater Dress is my winter version of my summer maxi dress. It’s so easy to just throw it and instantly look chic.

When it comes to what color sweater dress to go with, again I’m going to say neutrals here. I wear my white sweater dresses the most (just make sure the fabric is thick enough not to be see-through). I also find my gray sweater dress, navy sweater dress and, of course, black sweater dress super versatile.

As for the length? I personally love them all, short, mid and long. But if I could only choose one, I would go with a mid length since it’s the most versatile.

#4: OTK Boots

Over the years, over the knee boots have transformed from a trendy shoe to a classic winter staple. I’ve collected pairs in just about every neutral color. But if you’re just starting your OTK boots collection I would go with black or tan, since they go with the most outfits.

My most comfortable ones are these black suede over the knee boots and tan suede over the knee boots. The heel is just the right height that allows me to wear them from casual to dressy occasions. I’ve rounded ups some more pairs I like below.

#5: Leather Pants

I live in leather pants when I’m in cold weather. I remember one New York fashion week in February that I styled 6 of my 8 outfits around my leather pants!

After my favorite pair ripped, I found a new pair I loved. I did a whole video on different ways to wear them over on IGTV. You can also see more outfit ideas here.

#6: Neutral Chunky Sweater

Chunky sweaters are insanely comfy. They also look super chic when worn with skinny jeans, midi skirts or even belted over a dress.

While I love color, I find my beige and tan sweaters to be the most versatile. I wear them and love them every winter.

#7: Ankle Booties

A good pair of ankle boots is key during winter months. You can wear them with jeans, pants or with tights under skirts and dresses.

I like black ankle boots. These black booties (now on sale) have a slightly chunky heel. So they easily transition from day to night.

#8: Black Jeans

When I’m not wearing leather pants in cold weather, you’ll usually find me in black jeans. I like black skinny jeans because I can pair them with any shoe, from booties to over the knee boots.

A mid-rise with a bit of stretch is a timeless denim staple that you can wear year after year.

#9: Long Sleeve Layering Tee

I’ve raved about Uniqlo’s Heattech Collection on my blog before. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without the layering tops when I’m in the cold.

For more moderate weather, I wear the long-sleeve tees on their own under jackets and coats. When it’s really cold I use them to keep warm under everything from sweaters to dresses.

#10: Black Tights

You can never go wrong with a pair of black opaque tights. I like to use them to lengthen my legs with black pumps and boots.

They also help smooth your body under dresses and skirts, especially if you go for a control-top version.

#11: Chic Beanie

My ears always get frozen in the cold. So a beanie is my best friend. I love white beanies, because they give that chic snow bunny look. But when I was in New York in the freezing cold a few months ago, I picked up a blush beanie. The color went with everything I brought with me on my trip!

I hope this list of winter fashion staples helps you as you’re working on your cold weather capsule wardrobe. With them, I’m able to create endless outfits… and they keep me warm while still looking stylish!
