Original Olaplex Lash Bond guide continues below

Following a series of online leaks, Olaplex has finally opened up pre-orders for its new Olaplex lash serum called LashBond Building Serum.

Given that Olaplex has become renowned for helping the hair on your head grow stronger and healthier, it makes sense that the brand would venture into targeting the hair elsewhere on our bodies.

Below we explain everything you need to know about Olaplex Lashbond including how it works, its price, and where to buy it.

We also recently published our Olaplex Lash Bond review, which you can read here.

Olaplex

What is Olaplex LashBond?

The Olaplex LashBond Building Serum is an “eyelash enhancing serum” that uses the brand’s patented bond-building technology. It promises to make lashes thicker, fuller, and longer with repeat use. The official brand description says the lightweight lash serum “delivers highly effective concentrations” of:

  • Olaplex Peptide Complex Technology
  • Olaplex Bond Building Technology
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Biotin

From a look at the LashBond ingredients, there are three different peptides in this lash serum as well as Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate. This is is the key ingredient found across the rest of the Olaplex haircare range. We explain more about how this works, and by default how the lash serum works, below. You can also jump straight to our analysis of the serum ingredients by clicking here.

The lash serum also contains glycerin and panthenol – two other ingredients that hydrate the skin – as well as an antibacterial ingredient called Chlorphenesin. This fights off bacteria and fungus, which is especially important when it comes to products that go in and around the eye.

All of this combines to support and repair the skin barrier at the lash line.

All of Olaplex’s products contain an ingredient called bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate. According to Olaplex’s patent, the two ends of bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate form bonds with the sulfurs in the hair to create an “artificial disulfide bridge”. This makes the hair stronger and less likely to break.

Olaplex

As with the majority of eyelash serums today, the LashBond Building Serum also contains ingredients such as peptides, biotin, panthenol, and vitamins.

When applied directly to the base of the eyelashes, this combination of skin-loving and balancing ingredients nourishes and strengthens the eyelash follicles.

Over time this helps to stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles, which can lead to fuller, thicker, stronger lashes. It can also prevent breakage.

The reason this makes the lashes look fuller is that it prevents lashes from falling out as regularly as they normally would.

It’s important to note that not all eyelash serums are created equal, and some are more effective than others.

We’d suspect Olaplex’s LashBond to be one of the more effective ones, but we won’t know until we put it to the test.

When will I see results with the Olaplex LashBond?

Olaplex claims that when applied to the lash line twice a day, the serum will sustain the natural growth cycle and lash retention and this will result in conditioned, healthier-looking lashes “in as little as two weeks”. However, this study only tested the product on 33 people – a small sample size that is unlikely to be representative of the different lash hair types.

In our experience – as you can read in our Olaplex LashBond review – it took just three weeks for us to see a noticeable difference.

Is Olaplex LashBond safe?

There isn’t anything in the Olaplex LashBond formula that jumps out as a potential problem. The majority of ingredients are already found in rival eyelash growth serums and Olaplex claims that the LashBond Building Serum is ophthalmologist tested. The only ingredient that isn’t found in other serums is Olaplex’s patented Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate.

However, this ingredient equally hasn’t had any confirmed reports of causing problems so the lash serum should be safe to use. As with any new skincare product, we recommend performing a patch test first – away from your eye – to make sure you don’t have a reaction.

Olaplex LashBond Ingredients

As listed above, Olaplex claims its LashBond eyelash serum works so well because it contains Olaplex Peptide Complex Technology, Olaplex Bond Building Technology, hyaluronic acid, and biotin. Below we take a look at the scientific evidence behind these ingredients.

Olaplex Peptide Complex Technology

The peptide complex includes three peptides:

  • Palmitoyl pentapeptide-3 Amide: This is said to be proprietary to Olaplex but is based on peptides that have been studied. This includes palmitoyl pentapeptide-3, which also goes under the name Matrixyl. This ingredient has been shown to boost collagen levels in the skin, although the efficacy of the product is still debated.
  • Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17: Also known as MP17, this peptide has been used in eyelash serums for years. It’s been scientifically shown to help improve the length, volume, thickness, and curl of lashes when used in an eyelash serum. In fact, it was shown to increase curl by almost 51%. The sample size of this study was a small group of just 29 subjects but the results are still notable.
  • Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3:  This peptide is common in hair loss and hair thickness products. It has been shown to stimulate the proteins around the hair follicles. This can help to anchor the hair fibre into the follicle, which makes the hair strands stronger and reduces hair loss.

Olaplex Bond Building Technology

mamabella | mamabella

The Olaplex Bond Building Technology is built around the brand’s patented ingredient, bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate.

This ingredient helps repair the bonds in broken hair, it’s a temporary fix – as in the effect is lessened over the course of a couple of weeks unless it’s used regularly – and we’re not sure how this would be of benefit in the Olaplex LashBond.

Eyelash hair doesn’t break in the same way longer hair on the head does. It can become weak, though, and this may be where the Bond Building Technology comes into its own.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is listed in the LashBond ingredients as Sodium Hyaluronate, meaning it’s the sodium form of the acid. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the skin and acts like a sponge that helps to soak up water and keep hold of it. This helps boost the skin’s hydration, which in turn helps it look plumper and more elastic. It’s so effective, it can hold and bind up to 1,000 times its own weight in water.

The benefit that this brings to your eyelashes is that it makes the skin on the eyelid, and thus the around the hair follicles, more hydrated and healthier. This in turn helps strengthen them to keep hold of lashes for longer. This can help the lashes look and feel thicker.

Biotin

Biotin is often touted as being able to create thicker and healthier hair and nails. When taken as a supplement, especially if the person taking the supplement has a deficiency of biotin, then it has been shown to be effective. However, the results when biotin is applied topically, and on the skin and hair of people without this deficiency, are still debated.

Glycerin

Shutterstock

Elsewhere in the Olaplex LashBond formula is glycerin. This is another humectant – or sponge – that is found naturally in the skin and helps to maintain hydration and moisture.

However, glycerin also works as an occlusive. Occlusives create a barrier on your skin to prevent water loss, and by doing so they lock in the hydration they attract. It also stays in the skin after application, which means it also helps to protect the skin from pollution or irritation.

This is ideal for the skin around your eyes given how much they can be exposed to blue light, and pollen during summer months, and how easy it is for the skin to become blocked from mascara and other makeup.

What about my brows?

Just as many brands that release eyelash serums tend to do, Olaplex recently added to its range with the launch of BrowBond – a growth serum designed to tackle thinning eyebrows.

Olaplex calls it a 3-in-1 brow innovation and the BrowBond Building Serum helps make eyebrows look fuller, denser, and more defined in as little as four weeks. This is because it contains ingredients including biotin, hyaluronic acid, and Olaplex’s patented Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate.

Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate is found across all Olaplex products, including the Olaplex No.3 treatment, and is what helps treat the bonds in the hair to make the strands stronger.

Beyond thicker and denser eyebrows, Olaplex said the BrowBond doubles up as a clear grooming gel serum, and it has been formulated with peptides that work to reduce the appearance of grey hairs. We wonder if we could use it on our head hair?!
