In our Revlon One-Step hair dryer brush review, we see if the volumising hot brush is as good as TikTok would have us believe

If you’re a TikTok fan, you’ll be aware of the Revlon Hair Dryer Brush – officially known as the Revlon Pro Collection One-Step Dryer and Volumizer.

It dominated For You Pages globally throughout the lockdown and is still featured in millions of videos every day. So, of course, we wanted to put it to the test for our Revlon One-Step Hair dryer review.

Since we published this review, Revlon has upped the game with the launch of the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus. The Revlon Plus has a smaller barrel, thinner handle and comes with a number of tech improvements that solve some of the issues we have with the original. Namely, the Revlon Plus is now made from ceramic-titanium tourmaline.

Revlon Hair Dryer Brush review

What is the Revlon hair dryer brush? As you may have read in our best hair dryer list, the Revlon One-Step hair dryer has a large, heated barrel that blows hot air over your hair as you brush it through. Instead of having to angle your hair and your arms trying to blow dry your hair with a brush and traditional dryer, the Revlon One-Step hair dryer brush combines the two.

Revlon hair dryer brush settings: On the bottom of the brush, where it meets the cable, is a rotating control that lets you select from two heat, and two-speed settings. These include:

• I: Warm and Moderate
• II: How and Fast
• III: Cold and Fast

Revlon hair dryer brush price: The Revlon One-Step hair dryer retails for £62.99 but is often on sale for £40 or less.

Revlon hair dryer brush range: The Revlon hair dryer brush is part of Revlon’s wider One-Step range. This includes the Revlon One-Step Plus, the One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler, and the One-Step Style Booster. The Plus is a thinner version of the original barrelled brush. The Styler is a heated paddle brush that is better suited to straight, sleeker styles, and the Style booster is a smaller hot brush for touching up styles.

How to use Revlon Hair Dryer Brush

To add volume to your hair, place the Revlon hair dryer brush at your roots and pull your hair up and out to dry it.

When you want to dry the ends, wrap the brush-up and under and hold for five seconds. Or you can pull your hair and spin it away from your face to create flicks.

You can also create curls using the Revlon One-Step hair dryer. When your hair is wet, wrap the Revlon hair dryer brush at your roots, with the top facing towards the ceiling, and rotate it as you slowly move it down through your hair.

If you want waves rather than curls, dry your hair to around 80% dry and repeat this process.

Revlon Hair Dryer Brush Ease-of-use

The Revlon One-Step hair dryer is incredibly easy to use, even one-handed.

All of which can be done while you’re busy doing something else, like brushing your teeth (if there’s a safe plug nearby), blending your foundation, curling your eyelashes, or just using your phone.

We’ve also used the One Step in one hand while using a traditional dryer in the other – effectively using the Revlon dryer in lieu of a brush, to speed things up even further.

This makes the Revlon hair dryer brush perfect for people who are short on time because you don’t need both hands to nail the bouncy blowdry look. It’s also perfect for those of us who haven’t quite mastered the old pull and dry standard blow drying technique yet.

Revlon One-Step hair dryer Performance

Having used the Revlon One-Step exclusively for a month, we can honestly say our hair has never looked so great. Certainly not with such little effort and skill involved.

We’re very big fans of both the Dyson Supersonic and the GHD Helios – as you can read in our Dyson Supersonic review, and GHD Helios review – because they both dry incredibly quickly with minimal hair damage.

However, because they’re both so powerful, they tend to blow our hair almost into submission. The only way to get bounce and volume is to use a large barrel brush and really work our roots up and out. This extra effort takes away, somewhat, from their respective speeds.

By comparison, it’s almost impossible not to get bounce, volume, and even curls when using the Revlon One-Step. The large, oval design means that hair is lifted by default. It gives us the kind of volume our thin, lifeless hair only usually gets when we’ve spent an hour curling it with straighteners, walking around with curlers in, or relying on the GHD Rise.

What’s more, because the Revlon One-Step styles and dries at the same time, it helps reduce frizz. The kind of frizz we’d usually turn to our GHD Platinum Plus to get rid of.

As a result, the Revlon One-Step has become both our day-to-day dryer, as well as the one we turn to when we want to make a statement with large curls.

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumiser UK Review: Verdict

Despite how enamoured we are with the Revlon One-Step hair dryer, there are a few catches. Firstly, the Revlon hair dryer brush is quite loud. So much so we have to warn our son when we’re about to turn it on, otherwise it makes him jump.

It also doesn’t come with ionic technology – which is the technology that leaves your hair looking shiny when you use traditional dryers like the GHD Helios.

Thirdly, despite the fact it adds incredible volume, large, bounce and shine, the results can lack a level of versatility. For instance, we sometimes use a smaller barrel brush with our GHD Helios to create smaller, tighter curls by wrapping our hair round the brush and blasting it with hot air for 10 seconds. This obviously isn’t possible with the Revlon One-Step.

And finally, the Revlon One-Step usually costs £62.99. This feels a tad expensive when you don’t have the versatility of being able to create different styles with this hot brush, yet it’s an absolute bargain when you consider that our other faves – the Dyson and Helios – retail for £300 and £159 respectively.

Plus, the Revlon One-Step rarely sells for that much and it’s very often on offer at various places including Amazon and Argos.

Because of its large barrel, this Revlon hair dryer brush will also likely suit longer hair better, but we’ve used it on mid-length hair and it works well. In fact, it styled our bob beautifully.

The vast timesaving element will apply more to thinner hair, so if you have thick hair, it will still take time to dry but at least you’re styling it at the same time.

We must also admit that we’re being picky. All these things considered, we think the Revlon One-Step is the best hair dryer brush we’ve used, and can easily replace traditional hair dryers. We use it daily and we miss it, and notice a huge difference if we are forced to use any other dryer!
