TikTok Ban? Not in Mexico

Hold onto your hats, folks! The Tiktok saga continues, with Mexico taking a different stance from the United States and Canada.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, TikTok is a wildly popular video-sharing app that has taken the world by storm. But with its meteoric rise in popularity has come concerns about data privacy and security, especially given that the app is owned by a Chinese company.

Last week, TikTok’s CEO faced a grilling by U.S. lawmakers, who are calling on the government to ban the app due to concerns about data collection, censorship, and harm to children’s mental health. Meanwhile, Canada has already banned the app from government-issued devices, citing similar risks.

But what about Mexico? Well, the country’s president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has declared “complete freedom” for the app. During his regular morning news conference, he was asked about TikTok and responded by vowing not to ban it.

So, while the U.S. and Canada have taken a hard line on TikTok, it looks like Mexico is taking a more relaxed approach. But the Chinese foreign ministry is not letting the U.S. off the hook so easily, saying on Monday that the U.S. has yet to present any evidence of TikTok posing a national security risk.

Who knew a video-sharing app could cause such a commotion? One thing is for sure: the TikTok drama is far from over, and it looks like the whole world is watching to see how it plays out.
