Gynecomastia: what can make a man grow "female" breasts.

Gynecomastia, a condition in which a man's breasts grow to resemble those of a woman, is a source of great concern for men, and not without good reason. The very term itself derives from the Latin words "gynes" and "mastos," meaning "woman" and "breast," respectively. The condition is often colloquially referred to as "Tutankhamen's Breasts," after the Egyptian pharaoh, who is believed to have had an effeminate body and enlarged pectoral glands.

According to modern medical historians such as Howard Markel, there is evidence to suggest that Tutankhamen did indeed suffer from gynecomastia. In fact, the condition is quite common, with one in four men seeking medical help for the problem of "female breasts." However, some doctors do not view gynecomastia as an independent disease, instead viewing it as a symptom of an underlying pathology. This can be anything from age-related hormonal changes to the presence of a particular disease.

The primary cause of gynecomastia is the presence of female Hormones, or estrogens, in the male body, which are present in higher concentrations than male hormones, or androgens. This hormonal imbalance is particularly common in adolescents, affecting up to 70% of them. However, as men age and their reproductive function declines, the ratio of male to female hormones tends to even out, and the condition often resolves itself. This type of gynecomastia is known as physiological.

However, there is also a pathological form of gynecomastia, in which the condition is caused by a variety of factors. These can include tumors of the pituitary gland, testicles, adrenal glands, pancreas, or prostate, as well as congenital or acquired testicular pathologies, endocrine disorders such as diabetes or thyroid tumors, and conditions such as Cushing's syndrome, heart failure, liver failure, or kidney failure. As such, it is essential to consult a specialist if you notice any enlargement of your breast tissue.

Dr. Hulse, a prominent figure in the American Cancer Society, elucidates the matter of male breast overgrowth, which can be caused by a variety of factors including cancer. It is well-known that most breast cancers commence in the ducts that are responsible for milk transfer (ductal cancer) or the glands that produce milk (lobular cancer). Astonishingly, men also have these ducts and glands, albeit they are not functional. In cases where a man's areola swells around his nipple and his bosom begins to increase in size, it is imperative to seek medical attention. However, it is not always indicative of cancer, according to Dr. Hulse. The vast majority of breast tumors that are discovered are benign, and only a minute proportion of them are due to cancer. Dr. Hulse went on to explain that the trigger for benign tumors could be testicular trauma or infectious diseases, as well as circulatory disorders in the genitals.

Jayanti Ravindrana, a distinguished plastic surgeon at the reputable Tamira Clinic in India, encounters gynecomastia cases most frequently, caused by the excessive consumption of beer, also known as false gynecomastia. This condition arises as a consequence of obesity in the male physique, which has nothing to do with male and female hormones. It's simply due to the accumulation of adipose tissue in the breast region, which subsequently increases, much like any other organ would, with an increase in total body weight. In contrast to false gynecomastia, genuine gynecomastia occurs when there is damage to the glandular tissue, which occupies a large portion of the breast. During the course of the disease, there is hypertrophy of the tissue, which can lead to an expansion of up to twenty centimeters.

Regarding beer, specialists at the Endocrinological Scientific Center of Rosmedtechnology have explicated that this alcoholic beverage contains phytoestrogens, which are hormones that can result in an increase in estrogens, the female sex hormones, in the human body. The more a man imbibes beer, the more feminized his physique becomes, which is characterized by the appearance of curvatures and enlargement of the mammary glands. Interestingly, experts have discovered that such hormones are present in some meats, and the excessive consumption of such products can also contribute to the development of gynecomastia.
