The Wrens Nest, Radstock: A Cosy Barn-Style Airbnb Near Bath

Just a stones throw from the beautiful city of Bath in Somerset, you’ll discover a charming Airbnb called The Wrens Nest. This one bedroom, barn-style property has been lovingly restored by the hosts to such a high standard. It’s full of modern day comforts, that have been blended with heaps of rustic-property charm. So much thought’s gone into the smallest of details here; from the retro toggle light switches to the swirly door handles. Which remind me of something from the cover of an animated Tim Burton film – but perhaps thats just me!

If you’ve been on my blog before, you will know that anywhere with exposed beams and vaulted ceilings is a right up our street. So we were super excited to spend the weekend at this newly opened Airbnb. The online catalogue photos looked inviting, but this place is even better in real life. It’s tricky to capture its true charm in pixels.

If you’re looking for a romantic (and affordable) weekend away near Bath, then keep reading.

The kitchen at The Wren’s Nest

Although The Wren’s Nest is only small, I think the compact kitchen came with more utensils than what we have in our own home! It’s so well equipped.

There is a fancy AEG kettle, along with a bright red Nespresso coffee machine. Which the hosts had provided us with a large selection of coffee pods to help ourselves to.

When it comes to cooking there is an induction hob with 4 rings, and plenty of pots and pans to cook to your hearts content. Below is a full sized oven, which even came with a pizza stone. Enabling you to up your frozen pizza game and avoid any soggy dough!

The Airbnb hosts have just gone the extra mile with all the little touches in here. For example the washing up liquid is in a cool retro Fairy bottle. The egg cups are funky birds, and even the oil is decanted into a glass bottle with birds on.

The pretty blue kitchen is handmade, and comes with unique drawers that have been created using old wine crates. I think it looks fabulous, and injects even more charm to the property.

There is no dishwasher at The Wrens Nest but the deep Belfast sink makes washing up a breeze.

Sleep peacefully in the beautiful bedroom

For me, the bedroom is the star of the show at this property. The winder staircase leads you straight into the impressive bedroom, where the vaulted ceiling and chunky exposed beams make your heart glow. There is a ginormous bed, which is dressed with pristinely ironed white sheets and styled with teal cushions and a bed runner.

The bed was super comfortable, and the cotton bedding was luxuriously soft and cosy. We both slept soundly and loved waking up in the morning to the sound of birds singing.

Inside the light and airy bedroom you’ll find a wardrobe with plenty of space and hangers to unpack for longer stays, and you could make use of the extra storage in the beside table drawers if you needed more space. There’s also a handy dressing table which had been fabricated from an old sewing machine stand, or this could easily double up as a desk if you needed to do a little bit of work whilst you’re away.

There is also a full length mirror in the bedroom, which is always a nice addition.

The living room & dining area

The downstairs of the property is a cosy open plan kitchen, living room and diner which is plenty big enough for two.

The teal theme continues downstairs, with a velvet teal two seater sofa. Although it’s not big enough to lay out on together, it’s comfortable to both sit side by side and watch TV, or cosy up with a book on a rainy afternoon. Perhaps a cushioned footstool would be a nice addition? Then you can kick your feet up at the end of the day, and relax with a nice glass of wine!

Opposite the sofa is a large TV that has been mounted on a unique wooden beam wall. The chunky wood adds warmth to the room, and it looks like it’s been made using rustic wooden sleepers.

Under the tv was the dining area. Like upstairs, the table was created using another retro sewing machine stand. Although this time the wooden top was marked with the words ‘Home Sweet Home’. Two hefty cast iron stools with squishy leather pads made the seating arrangements, and it was perfect for two.

Something we really loved in this room was the heated flooring! It was an absolute joy to walk on and it heated the room perfectly.

Goodies provided by the Airbnb hosts

The Airbnb hosts had left us a delicious selection of biscuits, which we found hidden inside the sweetest copper bird tin and quickly tucked into!

They had also provided us with some regular milk, which was housed inside a fab retro Kellogg’s glass milk bottle. An extra thoughtful addition was the individual oat milk sachets that had been left in the fridge too.

Handy condiments were provided too, like oil, vinegar, salt & pepper. I always find these sort of things so helpful when you’re on a weekend away. As it’s the sort of items you don’t want to buy or pack to bring with you!

Of course we can’t forget the tea bags, coffee and sugar too! Because nothing is more welcoming than being able to make a brew the moment you arrive.

Ensuite bathroom

The bathroom is found upstairs as it’s a beautiful ensuite off the bedroom.

The ensuite is a lovely size and the layout works really well. The walk in shower has a mix of charcoal and light grey tiles, and comes with a regular shower head along with a powerful rainfall shower.

Complementary shampoo, conditioner and shower gel had been provided, and the shower gel smelt delicious!

Opposite the shower was the toilet and basin, and the bathroom mirror had a built in light and de-misting feature. Meaning it never fogged up when the room became steamy after using the shower.

There was a shallow rectangle basin, with space on the side to keep your wash-bags and toiletries. We were also provided with the fluffiest white towels, and a bath matt for the floor.

Again there was so much attention to detail in here. Even the wall hangers were adorable little hares, and the toilet roll had been folded and embossed with a dragonfly stamp .

Designated Airbnb parking space

Right out the front of The Wren’s Nest is a designated parking space, marked with a small slate sign on the low stone wall. So you don’t need to worry about trying to find a parking space, or having to lug your bags a long way from the car. Access to The Wrens Nest is just down a few steps.

Access & privacy at the property

The Wren’s Nest is semi detached, connecting onto the Airbnb’s hosts home. Although other properties surround it, we barely heard our neighbours so it was super peaceful. We loved being able to listen to all the birds chirping away outside. Something we don’t hear much of back at home!

Access was easy and contactless, as the Airbnb hosts had left the key in the key safe box for us.

Location & things to do near The Wrens Nest

You’ll find this lovely renovated barn down a quiet cul-de-sac, just off Old Bath Road in Radstock.

The former coal-mining town of Radstock is around a 20 minute drive from the beautiful city of Bath. Well, it is when theres minimal traffic! Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which you may know for it’s impressive Roman Baths or the relaxing Bath Spa. Or perhaps you’ll even recognise some spots from the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film!

Or if you want to avoid the busyness of the city, the up and coming town of Frome is also around a 20 minute drive away. Check out all the independent shops that line the medieval streets, and be sure to explore Catherine Hill as thats full of old British charm.

Other day trip options from The Wren’s Nest are Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury Tor, Stonehenge or Longleat Safari Park! For some other scenic Somerset walks, take a look at my article The 8 Best Short Walks To Do In Somerset, 2024.

Utilities

As well as short weekend breaks, this Airbnb is well kitted out for longer stays too. Just inside the entry there is another door which opens up to a mini utility room. A washing machine along with iron, ironing board and pegs are all in there.

So you’re well equipped here for longer stays which is super impressive for such a small place!

Outdoor Space

As The Wrens Nest is fairly new, the outdoor space isn’t yet complete and doesn’t currently have one. But the hosts are hopefully beginning work on this soon, and they plan to make a small courtyard area for their guests to sit out and use. Access to the patio area will be through the back door in the open plan living room.

Entertainment options

There is an entire ledge of books as you come down the stairs, so you wont be short on reading material during your stay. Perhaps some board games would be a nice addition to The Wren’s Nest? We really enjoyed the games that were provided at The Barn in Cotleigh.

Downstairs there is the large LG OLED TV, which comes with logins for BBC and ITV. There is also the option to sign into your own Netflix accounts, so you can continue binge watching your favourite series!

Conclusion on The Wrens Nest

We loved our stay at The Wrens Nest, it felt like a cosy home away from home. The barn-style cottage was so quaint and it made a gorgeous place to retreat to. The attention to detail at this property is the best we have seen with Airbnb, plus we had everything we needed and it was spotlessly clean.

The location was also super convenient for exploring Bath, but came without the extortionate Bath price tag! To check availability click here.
