How to Use a Coil Jig

Coil jigs are handy tools that make it easier to wrap coils consistently. They guide the wire as you wrap it around a rod, ensuring neat and precise coils every time. Using a coil jig saves you effort and helps you achieve perfect coils effortlessly.

Many Coil Jigs come with detachable rods, allowing you to choose the desired diameter for your coils. Some popular coil jig brands include Coil Master, UD, and Kuro Concepts.

Wrapping coils using a coil jig is a simple and straightforward process. To learn more, watch a video by Sherlock Hohms. He demonstrates how to quickly wrap a 2.5 mm coil using a coil jig, giving you a step-by-step visual guide.

Vaping enthusiasts know that building their own coils is a rewarding and cost-effective way to enhance their vaping experience. To achieve the perfect coil, many vapers rely on coil jigs, essential tools designed to assist in coil building. Coil jigs make the process easier and more precise, allowing users to create various types and sizes of coils.

Different Types of Coil Jigs and Their Benefits

1.      The Mandrel Master

When it comes to coil building, precision is key. The Mandrel Master is a coil jig designed to provide unparalleled accuracy. Mandrel coil jigs are one of the most used types of coil jigs. They consist of a cylindrical rod with different diameters that are the foundation for wrapping the coil. The user selects the desired rod size, wraps the wire around it, and then removes it to reveal a perfectly shaped coil. Mandrel coil jigs offer versatility, allowing users to create coils of varying diameters, from micro coils to larger ones for cloud chasing.

2.      The Twisted Tornado

If you're a fan of intricate coil designs, the Twisted Tornado coil jig is a must-have. This innovative tool enables you to create twisted coils with ease. With its rotating mechanism and built-in swivel, you can effortlessly twist your wire to create stunning patterns. Experiment with different wire types and gauges to drive creativity and add a touch of uniqueness to your vaping experience.

3.      Screwdriver Coil Jigs

Screwdriver coil jigs function similarly to mandrel coil jigs, but instead of a cylindrical rod, they use screwdrivers of different sizes as the base. The user wraps the wire around the screwdriver, creates the desired number of wraps, and removes the screwdriver to obtain the coil. Screwdriver coil jigs are readily available in most vape kits and provide a cost-effective solution for coil building.

4.      Automatic Coil Jigs

Automatic coil jigs have gained popularity among vapers with their convenience and ease of use. These devices feature a motorised system that automatically wraps the wire around a mandrel or screwdriver. Users can create coils effortlessly by pressing a button, eliminating the need for manual wrapping. Automatic coil jigs come in various sizes and may have additional features such as adjustable wrapping speed and direction.

5.      The Clapton King

Clapton coils are renowned for their exceptional flavour production. To perfect this coil style, you need the Clapton King coil jig. This versatile tool simplifies creating Clapton coils by providing a stable platform to wrap your wire around. In addition, its adjustable pins accommodate various wire thicknesses, allowing you to experiment and find your desired Clapton coil configuration.

6.      The Alien Architect

The Alien Architect coil jig is a game-changer for vapers seeking the ultimate coil-building challenge. Alien coils are revered for their intricate and visually stunning designs. This coil jig streamlines the complex process of building Alien coils by offering precise spacing and alignment for your wire. With the Alien Architect, you can create mesmerising coils that impress even the most seasoned vapers.

7.      The Master Mesher

Mesh coils are popular for their exceptional vapour production and flavour intensity. The Master Mesher coil jig is designed explicitly for mesh coil buffs. With its innovative clamp system, this jig holds your mesh securely in place, allowing you to create perfectly tensioned and aligned coils every time.

8.      Coiling Rods

Coiling rods are coil jigs designed specifically for making spaced coils. They typically consist of a metal rod with evenly spaced notches or grooves. The wire is wrapped around the rod, ensuring each wrap is placed within the notches, resulting in evenly spaced coils. Coiling rods are preferred by vapers who enjoy the unique vaping experience provided by spaced coils.

How to Make Vape Coils

Always be cautious when working on your build deck or coil connected to a battery, as it may be hot or electrically charged. Only touch it by taking proper safety precautions, such as unplugging or removing the device's batteries.

For this vape coil building guide, let's aim to create a coil with the following characteristics:

  • Single coil: One coil on the coil builds deck.
  • 0.55Ω resistance: The desired resistance of the finished vape coil.
  • Kanthal: The material of the wire being used.
  • 3mm inner diameter (ID) macro coil: The inner diameter will be 3mm wide, creating a larger-sized coil.
  • Six full wraps: The wire will be wrapped around the coil jig six times, resulting in six "knuckles" on the top side of the coil.

We will use a Kanthal A1 24-gauge wire with a 3mm diameter to achieve this. Thoroughly wrap the wire around the coil jig six times. This will slightly exceed our target resistance of 0.55Ω, but it will be close enough.

You can find more information in the Vape Coil Building Information Centre to better understand these terms.

Conclusion

Building coils is a skill that elevates your vaping experience to new heights. Using the right jigs, you can enhance your precision, creativity, and consistency in coil building. The Mandrel Master, Twisted Tornado, Clapton King, Alien Architect, Master Mesher, and other coils mentioned in the blog are some must-have tools that will help you achieve perfection in your coil-building endeavors.
