I was born poor. If I work hard and become rich, only my kids will enjoy my wealth. Why should I become successful?

You can almost see this man — Elon Musk — carrying his son to meetings and public places, since he doesn’t want to miss out on his time with his son. When questioned about it, he said — My child did not choose to be born, but I chose to become a parent. They owe me nothing, I owe them everything.           People often think they do a favor by raising their children as if children are assets they own. No — raising children is your parenthood responsibility. You chose to become a parent. It’s your responsibility to take care of them from domestic problems and provide them with good food, clothes, education, and a safe place to sleep. And… it’s also your responsibility to be mentally and physically available with them, to take care of them, and not let them battle mental stress and depression all alone

Parenting is a responsibility — you don’t sacrifice your life for your children. You “prepare yourself” to be a responsible parent. Preparation is not sacrificing, it's a self-conscious decision.

You work hard to become rich because you want to retire rich, you want to die rich. You want to be remembered as a "successful man, a successful parent” by your society. You’re least bothered about what happens after you die — so don’t pretend as if you work hard for your children.

If you Father a baby outside your wedlock, legally you become its father. So your Wealth becomes a legal dispute in case you haven’t written a “will”, and even if you do, it still becomes a legal dispute between your legal heirs and your biological children. So there’s no guarantee that your legal heirs will enjoy your wealth after your death. You only complicate everybody’s life by being immoral.

Next, what’s wealthy to you may not be wealthy to your children, adjusted to inflation. My father purchased petrol for Rs 10 per liter and I bought it for Rs 100 per liter. In the past 25 years, the earning potential of an average Indian has increased a few, but spending has increased manifold due to inflation.

  •  A savings of Rs 1 crore is a big wealth in my father's generation, now the rate of a 2bhk in a luxury apartment in my city starts with 1.5 crores plus GST.
  •  MBBS annual tuition fee was Rs 8000 earlier, now it's Rs 25 lakhs per annum, and that’s multiplied for 5 years — this means your entire life savings are insufficient even to educate your children, what’s left over for them to enjoy life??                                                                                                           Dhirubhai Ambani has two sons —   Mukesh and Anil Ambani.
    •  Anil Ambani destroyed his share of wealth and filed for bankruptcy
    •  Mukesh Ambani is working hard to retain and grow the brand legacy his father left for their family

In both cases, both children aren’t enjoying their life. They’re working hard just to retain the legacy their father leftover. Their children will follow the same. They have peer pressure to save the legacy of their father and grandfather. Either they will blow up all their wealth and become poor, or work even harder than their previous generations to retain and grow wealth.

So with your wealth, you aren’t doing any favor to your children, or your grandchildren.

You set a platform for them to develop and retain, pass over the wealth to subsequent generations — it becomes a cycle.

However, always remember, that every generation puts in their efforts and fights a different battle to stay wealthy.

If you don’t want your children (or legal heirs) to enjoy your wealth, you can write a will to donate all your wealth to charity after your death.

But remember, until you die, you need money to survive. Your wealth is an indicator of your successful life, not your children's.
