Spotify: Why Bollywood songs removed from music app

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh's smash Bollywood blockbuster Bajirao Mastani's songs have vanished.

Imagine launching your favorite playlist, which you carefully curated over the course of hours, only to discover that half the tracks are missing.

You might not need to imagine it if you're a Bollywood lover with a Spotify account.

This is due to the app losing hundreds of tracks from some of India's biggest blockbusters.

After the previous one expired, Spotify claims it was unable to come to an arrangement with the owners of the songs.

The deleted successes included songs that have received millions of plays, such as Kala Chashma from Baar Baar Dekho or Malhari from the epic romance Bajirao Mastani.

Many users' playlists now have gaps in them; they didn't notice the songs were missing until after loading and playing them.

What will I attend to right now?

Vishma Rai, a devotee of Bollywood, was traveling by coach when BBC Newsbeat spoke with her.

Usually, she would have a playlist of her beloved songs from movies like Ram-Leela and Kalank to get her through the trip.

But this time, she discovered a large number of the lost.

I'm so angry; this is crazy," she exclaims.

The loss of Kalank Music is terrible. The title track was one of my faves, and it's just so depressing. When I want to feel loved up, I'm not sure what music I'll listen to.

According to Vishma, her go-to Bollywood playlist typically gives her a boost of energy in the morning.

Bollywood music enhances the action on-screen and endures in headphones years after a film's premiere, according to fans like Vishma.

When a movie doesn't perform well, people may recall the music instead.

Nagada Sang Dhol, from the tragic love story Ram-Leela—"one of the most epic movies ever," according to Vishma—is another of her faves.

And she won't just mourn them while traveling by coach.

"The fact that they're not there is so, so irritating. They used to make up a sizable portion of my morning anthems, she adds.

But now I'm at a loss for what to do. I really mourn them, and it's very upsetting.

Zeenat, a fellow movie enthusiast, informed Newsbeat that she had canceled her Spotify membership in protest.

Continuing the story

And users have flocked to threads on Twitter and Reddit to see if they are the only ones who are losing out.

One of the well-known tracks that is absent is the title track from the Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan film Kalank.

Spotify does not offer access to all of the world's audio and podcasts, as stated on its website.

It enters into licensing agreements with authors and rights holders, just like any other streaming service, to make use of their tracks.

It works in a manner akin to Netflix applications, whereby titles will vanish before resurfacing on a competing platform.

Or contracts expire, as it does with Bollywood music, and Spotify told BBC Newsbeat that it hasn't yet been able to arrange a new one.

But knowing that there is still hope will please supporters like Vishma.

Zee Music is a division of one of India's largest entertainment companies, and Spotify said it would continue "good faith" efforts to find a "creative solution" with Zee Music.
