15. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY BRIDGE TUNNEL – VIRGINIA, USA    

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel connects the Virginia mainland at Virginia Beach near Norfolk with Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Direct crossing time is approximately 25 minutes. The bridge-tunnel complex is 28 km long from shore to shore and consists mostly of low trestle bridges carrying a two-lane highway. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel was declared One of the Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World. And it’s no mystery why! It is a stunning complex that goes both over and under the open sea,  it’s actually the longest of its kind in the entire world.     

14. SILK ROUTE – INDIA     

The Silk Route refers to a network of ancient trade routes connecting Asia, Europe and Africa. Extending more than 6,500 km, the Silk Route was majorly used to transport Chinese Silk to Europe through Asia. It was the world’s first information superhighway. Other important items traded in this route were sugar, tea, horses, salt, copper and cotton. 13. PASO INTERNATIONAL LOS LIBERTADORES – CHILE   

The Paso International Los Liberatores, also called Cristo Redentor, is a mountain pass in the Andes between Argentina and Chile. With over 40 border crossings between the two countries spread over the mountains, the most spectacular and important is Paso de los Liberatores. It’s one of the most scenic drives in the world. The Chilean side of the road is very difficult to navigate through one of the most winding routes in the world. The Argentine side of the pass is of a gentler grade and much better maintained. It also carries more traffic as many tourists drive up and back to enjoy the views.      

12. PASSAGE DU GOIS – FRANCE     

Le Passage du Gois is a world-famous natural wonder. It is a causeway between Beauvoir-sur-Mer and the island of Noirmoutier, in Vendée on the Atlantic coast of France. The causeway is flooded twice a day by the high tide. It is a fascinating example of the ferocious power of nature. The length of the road (4,5 km) makes it all the more dangerous because, if you’re caught in the floods, it can be very difficult to reach dry land before the entire stretch becomes chest-deep in water.     

11. THE CABOT TRAIL – NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA     

This road is considered one of the world’s most scenic destinations with stunning ocean vistas, old-growth forests and amazing rock scarred by glaciers.  The Cabot Trail was built primarily to attract tourists and its is perfectly serving its purpose till date. The road passes through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. There are endless opportunities for outdoor adventure around the Cabot Trail, you can try hiking, kayaking, whale watching, riding, swimming and diving.    

10. Atlantic Ocean Road – Norway     

This road has been called many things, like “Norwegian Construction of the Century”, “the world’s best road trip” and “the road which takes you right out to the ocean’s edge”. The 8.3 km longroad is built on several small islands and skerries, and is spanned by eight bridges. The open sea view is a special, wonderful experience for drivers and travelers. There are several panoramic view and rest areas, where you can experience both nature and architecture in great interaction.    

9. Hana Highway – Hawaii     

Hana Highway is 84 km long and located in Maui. The road passes through an amazing green tropical rainforest. This narrow, serpentine coastal route offers a perfect choice to escape from daily routine, because you’ll have to pass through 600 curves and 59 bridges. The drive is very much worth it though and offers many amazing views of the northern coastline, tropical rainforests, waterfalls and black-sand beaches. It is necessary to be careful around blind curves, but it’s paved all the way and offers a great challenge to drivers.    

8. Rohtang Pass – India      

The name Rohtang means ‘pile of dead bodies’ due to the number of people who lost their lives trying to cross this road. The road is in terrible condition it is one of India’s most dangerous roads which can be a challenge for any vehicle to pass through. This road is usually open from May to November. The snowstorms and blizzards are unpredictable. I bet the road will give you goosebumps if you are lucky enough to experience zero traffic. Despite being so dangerous, this road is full of scenic beauty and one enjoys getting lost in the fascinating sights of the snowy mountain peaks, rivers and glaciers.      

7. Col de I’Iseran – France    

If you want to get away from the hustle of the city and spend some quality time in the beautiful nature, the Col de I’Iseran road is a perfect choice! Col de l’Iseran is absolutely the King of the Alps, it is situated in the department of Savoie in France near the border with Italy. It’s the highest paved mountain pass in the Alps, at an elevation of 2.764 m above the sea level. The road is only accessible in summer. While driving on this beautiful road, you are sure to be amazed by the beauty of the waterfalls, galleries, tunnels and all the scenic areas.    

6. National Route 40 – Argentina     

Whether you’re making a quick stopover or taking a longer road trip National Route 40 is a must-see when you visit Argentina. This road is really long and connects many historic monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well as nature reserves. National Route 40 road trip also gives you the opportunity to explore the variety of cultures in Argentina. You can feel that your trip is a never-endig journey, beacuse the road passes through a dozen mountains, rivers and as many as 20 national parks.     

5. The Overseas Highway – Key Largo to Key West Florida     

This beautiful highway has breathtaking views that would surely offer you peace of mind and a treat to your eyes.The Overseas Highway is a 181 km long highway carrying US 1 route through the Florida Keys to Key West. Getting from Miami to Key Largo takes about three hours. The Overseas Highway is just as it sounds, overseas. It means you’ll see some spectacular views, because the road passes through a number of coral reefs, islands and warm waters.     

4. Ring Road, Iceland    

This road will give you thrills and bring out the traveler and explorer in you! Ring Road 1,332 km long and circumvents the whole island, connecting most of the inhabited parts of the country. It’s an amazing journey across captivating landscapes, breathtaking volcanoes, mind blowing glaciers, rocky beaches, hot springs, fjords and amazing waterfalls. If you travel between September and April, there’s a chance you’ll catch the famous Northern Lights illuminating the sky. You could drive the whole Ring Road in 24 hours, but for the best experience I recommend no less than 7 days in Iceland.    

3. KARAKORAM HIGHWAY, PAKISTAN    

Pakistan offers this amazing and breathtaking road for travelers that is beautiful and awesome in its own way. This route crosses the Kunjerab Pass at a whopping 4,800 m above sea level, connecting Pakistan to Western China. This road was a caravan trail, one branch of the famous, ancient Silk Road. The route gives travelers access to the best peaks in Kashmir and Xinjiang, as well as taking in glaciers lakes and rivers. The highway has become a tourist attraction and ranked as the third best tourist destination in Pakistan. Believe it or not but it is the highest border crossing in the world.

The road journey from Te Anau to Milford Sound is one of the most scenic experiences you can have, it is an unbelievable trip into the heart of Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area.
