Christmas Gifts for Geeks

AD – Sponsored | With Christmas quickly approaching, I wanted to share a Gift guide for the geeks in your life who enjoy playing card games, board games, and roleplaying games.

Magic the Gathering Cards

When I was in university, I got into Magic the Gathering and built several decks, and even played in Friday Night Magic events. I no longer have my cards, but Magic the Gathering continues to have an active fanbase and many stores continue to host events. Wizards of the Coast recently released the Dominaria United set, and a booster box would be a great gift for those that play Magic the Gathering and want to build a new deck. There is also the Unfinity set, but those cards cannot be played in tournaments. However, they would still be fun to play with friends. There is also Magic the Gathering prints, pins, and mugs available that would make nice gifts as well.

Pokemon

Myself, my partner, and our daughter collect Pokemon cards, and for those that collect Pokemon cards or play the card game, a booster box would make a perfect gift. Last month, the new Lost Origin Pokemon card set was released, and during the summer, the Pokemon GO card set came out. Both sets would be great for getting some new cards and hopefully finding some big hits. There is also plenty of Pokemon-themed merch available from figures and ball replicas to pins and mugs.

Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons is a roleplaying game, and my partner played D&D as a teen and more recently collected various D&D roleplaying books and card games. For those you know that want to get into D&D, the Player’s Handbook is a great rulebook to start with along with a set of dice. For those more experienced with D&D, the Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen adventure book is available for pre-order, as well as prepainted and unpainted miniatures, and the Ghosts of Saltmarsh board game. Also, there are The 123s of D&D and The ABCs of D&D books for children, which my daughter has.

Board Games

For those that are more into board games, there several board games available for preorder including Lacrimosa where players complete Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final piece the Requiem, Turing Machine where you crack codes using an analog computer, and Skymines where players mine the moon by investing in mining companies. Other great older board games are The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth where players explore Middle-earth and work together to defeat evil, Eldritch Horror where you solve mysteries to stop an Elder God, and Carcassonne where players build cities one tile at a time. You can also gift puzzles that come in all different themes from Dungeons & Dragons and The Lord of the Rings to Super Mario and Disney.

Merch

My last suggestion for gifts for geeks is merch. You can find merch for their favorite games or series, and there are countless options from Pokemon plushes, Funko Pops figures, art prints, shirts, and Disney-themed backpacks. There are even Tamagotchi and Digimon electronic pets that would be awesome gifts.
