The Book That Changed the Way I Think About Fitness & Aging

Several years ago, I read a Book that changed the way I think about aging. I should mention that I’m not usually one to read a book more than once. But I’ve read this book at least three times, have recommended it to friends and family members and have even given it as a gift.

What is this magical literary work, you say? It’s a book called Younger Next Year for Women: Live Strong, Fit, Sexy, and Smart―Until You’re 80 and Beyond by Henry S. Lodge and Chris Crowley.

The basic premise of the book is that we can live strong, healthy, wonderful lives until we’re well into our 80s or older by following some very specific steps. The steady decline in quality of life that we have all come to expect as ‘normal aging’ simply does not need to happen. In contrast, we can look good, move easily, feel great, stay sharp and continue living happy and sexy lives until well into old age.

I do plan to outline the basic structure of the book below, but my bulleted list will be a poor substitute for the smart, science-based guidance and funny story-telling that make this book special. So read it! You won’t regret it. I promise.

About the Authors

Henry S. Lodge, M.D. was an internist specializing in gerontology (aging). Sadly, Dr. Lodge died in 2017 of Prostate Cancer, but his “Younger Next Year” book series is broadly considered to be required reading for people over 50 even though it was originally published over 15 years ago. Chris Crowley, a retired lawyer and co-author of” Younger Next Year for Women”, was Lodge’s former patient.

The authors tackle the subject matter in a scientific yet highly readable fashion with Lodge, or “Harry”, taking the medical chapters, and Chris filling the chapters in between with heart-warming and truly hysterical stories about himself, friends and family members.

The Basics

Harry Lodge basically has 7 Basic Rules. But seriously, you’re really missing out on the deep medical and scientific explanations and wonderful examples and stories that bring it to life and connect it to your own situation if you don’t actually read the book.

Harry’s Rules

  • Exercise six days a week for the rest of your life.
  • Do serious aerobic exercise four days a week for the rest of your life.
  • Do serious strength training, with weights, two days a week for the rest of your life (I struggle with this one!)
  • Spend less than you make.
  • Quit eating crap!
  • Care.
  • Connect and commit.

How I use this book

Whenever I’m feeling the need to motivate myself, I re-read this book. The audio book is also very good. “Younger Next Year for Women” truly changed the way I look at aging.

Of course, people can still get sick, as did Dr. Lodge himself. But, I’m a believer. I’m confident you will be, too!
