My Poulan Pro Leaf Blower is Running but Not Blowing – Causes and Fixes

Have you ever tried to start up your Leaf Blower only for it to start up and not produce any air? Intense air flow is necessary to efficiently blow leaves and collect them at one point. So why is your Poulan Pro leaf blower running but not blowing?

Common Reasons Why Your Poulan Pro Leaf Blower is Not Blowing Air

The most common problems that can prevent your Poulan Pro from blowing air, despite a running engine, are a damaged or loose Impeller or clogged air intake and blower air pathways. All these issues result in restricted or limited airflow.

Damaged Impeller

A Poulan Pro leaf blower uses an impeller to draw air through the blower housing and propels it through the blower tube. When the impeller is damaged or broken, it can’t pull in air; the leaf blower will not blow out any air.

Potential Fixes

  1. Inspect the impeller to see if it is damaged or broken.
  2. Replace the impeller if it is damaged or broken.
  3. Proceed to the next troubleshooting step if this does not work.

How to replace the impeller

  • Unscrew the fan housing from the side of the blower.
  • Remove the spark plug boot and spark plug.
  • Insert a socket wrapped in cloth into the spark plug hole to stop the piston from rotating inside the cylinder while the fan is unscrewed.
  • Once the old impeller is removed, replace it with a new impeller.

Clogged Impeller

Continued use could suck dust and other loose debris into the impeller surface. This will reduce the fin’s effective working surface, reducing its efficiency.

In the worst-case scenario, the debris can clog the impeller’s intake or fully block the fins.

  • The impeller won’t suck in air as well as it should through a blocked intake
  • The clogged fins are rendered useless, and they can’t move as much (or any) air as they should

Potential Fixes

  1. Inspect the impeller to see if it is clogged
  2. Clean the impeller and remove any debris or rocks that may be caused between the fins and other components.
  3. Proceed to the next troubleshooting step if this does not work.

Loose Bolt Connecting Impeller to the Engine

The Poulan Pro’s leaf blower impeller is connected to the engine using a single bolt. If the bolt becomes loose, it will prevent the impeller from rotating, as it is not getting spun by the crankshaft as it should.

Additionally, if the bolt sheers or falls off, your impeller will get no power. It won’t spin, and your unit will not blow any air. You might get cracking and grinding noises if this is the case.

Potential Fixes

  1. Tighten the impeller bolt if it is loose.
  2. Replace the bolt if it is damaged or rusty.
  3. Proceed to the next troubleshooting step if this does not work.

Clogged or Broken Outlet Tube

The tube directing airflow when a leaf is blowing can prevent the leaf blower from blowing hard if the air is redirected elsewhere. Additionally, if the tube is damaged, then it will not be able to transfer air as it should.

Potential Fixes

  1. Check if the leaf blower redirects air through the blower housing and changes the settings.
  2. If this does not work, replace the leaf blower tube.
  3. Proceed to the next troubleshooting step if this does not work.

Notes:

  • If this does not work, hire a professional to look at your leaf blower.
  • If it is still under warranty, you can get it fixed and serviced by an authorized professional.
  • To avoid future stalling issues, regular maintenance will prevent your leaf blower from breaking down.
  • Ensure your leaf blower is not running before you open it so you can troubleshoot any of the issues listed above.
  • You should also not attempt to fix any issue when the leaf blower is running.
  • Lastly, if you are not well versed in electrical repairs, do not attempt to repair parts that produce an electric charge to avoid getting electrocuted.
