Why did Darren change his screen name by removing his surname?

Singer Darren Espanto admits he feels the pressure of being part of his first major teleserye.

Darren plays an important role in the primetime series “Can’t Buy Me Love,” headlined by the love team of Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano.

In the recent media conference of “Can’t Buy Me Love” at Seda Hotel, FreebieMNL asked Darren about how he feels about his first full-length teleserye.

He admits, “There’s definitely more pressure po kasi it’s something that we are always shooting almost on a daily basis, lalo na silang dalawa—si Donny at saka si Belle.”

ABS-CBN was able to prepare him for acting when he became part of the iWant series “Lyric and Beat.” However, there are still differences in terms of preparing since “Lyric and Beat” was already canned when it aired, unlike a teleserye which continues to tape as it airs.

He says, “You really have to know your lines, know your character once on the set unlike when we shot ‘Lyric and Beat’ which was a canned series, we had more time to prepare din po.

“At saka alam na namin kung ano yung produktong ilalabas namin before everyone else got to see it.

“So, it is when you just have to be more concentrated on your character, more focused everytime you’re on set para mas mabilis din po yung shoot namin.”

So far, Darren has adjusted to the teleserye lifestyle that is usually fast-paced and can be a little taxing when an actor has a lot of scenes for a day.

He shares, “Okay naman po, everyone is very helpful and our directors are always there to guide us sa lahat ng mga shoot namin.

“So, hindi ako yung type na kinakabahan kapag nasa set because everyone’s there to be able to help me and guide me with my role din po.”

From Darren Espanto to just Darren

During the media conference, Darren was introduced as “Darren” without his surname. It is also the same screen name he used when the teleserye premiered on October 16.

FreebieMNL also asked Darren about this change.

“Dinisown na po ako ng pamilya ko,” he jokes.

But apparently, the change is really part of the new era he is entering as an artist.

He explains, “I feel like it goes better with the brand that I am trying to portray also as a singer din po and as an artist.

“So, it’s not really much of a big deal. But for now, it’s just Darren lang po.”

Darren, more popularly known as a singer, started his career as a finalist of “The Voice Kids.” Aside from “Can’t Buy Me Love,” he is also set to be seen acting in the MMFF entry “When I Met You In Tokyo,” where he is paired with rumored girlfriend Cassy Legaspi.
