Alessandra de Rossi is adamantly saying no to kontrabida roles

Alessandra de Rossi has been more active in doing films rather than television projects recently.

If there’s any wonder why she has not been appearing in teleseryes for the past five years, it was actually her choice.

“After ko bayaran yung bahay ko, hindi na ako nag-TV. Can’t you see?” she says with a laugh.

Apparently, Alessandra had been paying off a house when she was still doing TV work.

She says, “Hindi ko pinagsisisihan yung bahay ko kasi noong pandemic, na-realize ko, ang swerte ko may bahay ako pero hindi na para magkaroon ako ng desire to have another bayarin.

“Pero kapag nakita niyo uli na gumaganun ako, ‘Hoy, ikaw! Chuchuchuchu!’ Bumili yan ng beach house!

“Huwag niyo akong i-judge, invited kayo sa party! Kapag naka-heels na naman ako pero may puson na this time, nakipag-away sa bida, malamang may binabayaran ako.”

Alessandra is just saying that she no longer wants to play Kontrabida Roles on TV, where she has been typecast since she played Valentina in GMA-7’s 2005 version of “Darna.”

She says, “Suntukan, game ako kahit diyan sa kanto, huwag lang sa TV.

“Magturo tayo ng maganda, yun naman ang sinasabi ko dating dati pa, wala lang nakikinig kaya lang kailangan yata ako gumawa on my own. So, ginawa ko na lang. Buti na lang! I’m just saying! So, no regrets, as in wala kahit isa.”

Alessandra talked to FreebieMNL in an intimate media sit-down with select media for the preliminary launch of GMA Pictures’ movie, “Firefly,” on September 22 at Azadore Restaurant, Quezon City.

“Firefly,” a magic realism movie directed by Zig Dulay, is Alessandra’s first movie under GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs. She co-stars in the film with child actor Euwenn Mikaell.

The movie is one of the films aspiring to make it to the last four films of the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival, which will be chosen based on finished product.

Alessandra firmly says no to kontrabida roles

Now, Alessandra—also called Alex in showbiz circles—can freely choose the projects she wants to do.

Of this, she remains very adamant in saying that she no longer wants to go back to TV.

In fact, when she was asked if she missed doing TV work, she firmly says, “No! Never.”

Alex admits that playing kontrabida roles already had an effect on her body.

She shares, “Sumasama ang katawan ko doon kasi lagi kang galit, hindi ka naman nagagalit in real life. So, meron akong acidity, sore throat sa kakasigaw. Nagpa-palpitate ako! Every other day kasi yun for 10 years.

“Sabi ko, ayoko na ng ganito. Tinigil ko siya, nawala lahat. Pati yung minsan, may kaunting kaya kong magsungit kapag nabigla before? Wala pala, it’s inside you lang. Wala akong ganun talaga.”

She even experienced it when she was working on “Through Night and Day, ” where she portrayed a sick woman.

“Even yung time na namatay ako sa ‘Through Night and Day,’ namatay na rin ako, buti na lang nabuhay ako! Para siyang tinototoo ng katawan ko, so ayoko na.

“Nararamdaman ko kasi na totoo siya, dapat pala hindi. So, hindi ko alam kung kumuha na ba ako dapat ng method ba na huwag masyadong totohanin?

“Ang problema, sa take ko lang naman siya tinototoo. Kapag cut, hindi na. Tatanggap na lang ako ng role na maganda lang ako!”

But because of past experiences, Alessandra just chose not to accept teleserye offers in general.

She recalls, “Yung huli, ginawa ko lang naman kasi sabi, leading lady pero hindi naman totoo. Kaya ayoko na talagang gumawa kasi nga parang kapag teleserye…”

Alex then relates another story from one of her past projects when she almost played a “killer,” which was not in the original plan.

She remembers asking the production, “Oh, tinutulak ko na yung nanay niya sa wheel chair pababa ng hagdanan? Killer ako dito?”

Her explanation to her was, “E, ganun talaga. Inggit na inggit ka sa bida…’”

She would ask, “Yeah, pero killer na ito, e,” but the answer she would only get was “Gawin mo na lang.”

Still, Alessandra was adamant in questioning the scene, saying, “Wait, panghapon ito, may mga batang nanonood.”

It even got to a point where she reminded them, “Wala naman nito sa storycon. Di ba, ang usapan, inggit lang ako sa bida pero hindi ko papatayin yung nanay niya dahil lang inggit ako sa kanya? Bakit, makukuha ko ba yung ganda niya?”

That was when Alex started to think harder about the projects she would do. She says, “Sa values talaga, sa gusto kong ipakita.”

She even adds, “Wala namang kontrabida sa totoong buhay. Wala naman akong nakitang nagsasabunutan diyan sa kalye sa baba ng cafe. Diretso kulong yun, ‘di ba?

“Bakit pa siya nakakauwi sa bahay? Sabi ko, ang tagal niyang galit, 42 days na siyang galit, hindi pa ba siya namamatay? Charot! Kanina pa siya galit, kahapon pa siya galit, yan pa rin ang suot niya! Maligo ka please,” she quips.

But what will make her say yes to another kontrabida role?

The 39-year-old actress answers: “Beach house! Bibilhin ko muna ‘tapos ipa-file natin sa bangko, yes! Yung blind na pagbili na naman na akala mo dati kaya mo!”

She then looked back at the time she bought a house, which was the primary reason why she was working on TV non-stop.

“Akala ko, in three years, mababayaran ko. 10 years to pay, inabot talaga siya ng ten years.

“Akala ko, kaya ko ng three pero dumating na yung time na nagdadalaga ka na, so puro pa-sexy na, pa-kissing scene na. Hindi ko kasi alam yun noong time na bumili ako ng house, e. Kung alam ko lang na aabot ako doon, hindi ko na lang binili.”

The perfect time to retire from kontrabida roles

In 2015, 10 years after Alex bought her house, she decided that it was time to lie low in playing kontrabida roles. But it was in 2016 that she ultimately stopped accepting such projects when she was already hurting children for a TV show.

A year later, a blessing landed on her lap.

She recalls, “Kasi nga sunud-sunod yun, e, noong nag-stop ako mag-kontrabida, ayoko na, sumabog yung ‘Kita Kita.’

“Sobrang galing yung timing na hindi na ako tatanggap ng mga show na ganyan, ayoko ng ganyang message, sumabog yung ‘Kita Kita.’”

“Kita Kita” was Alessandra’s blockbuster film with Empoy Marquez. With its success, the movie opened the possibility that she could be a leading lady, which she has not been since she was typecast in kontrabida roles.

She continues, “Kasi hindi ko naman naisip na ganun yung mangyayari, e, nangyari siya. Ah, may maniniwala na sa ‘yo ngayon na pwede kang ibenta.

“Before, no. Lahat, even before ‘Kita Kita’ was made, hirap hanapan ng producer yan kasi no lahat. But understandable, mahirap talaga.

“And then when it happened, ‘Uy, pwede, ha. Pwede pala ito.’ Hindi ko talaga naisip, so binigyan ako ng different… kumbaga, tinalikuran ko siya ‘tapos binigyan ka ng different direction, thank you.”

That was when she finally decided to say no to kontrabida roles.

She says, “No na. No na. As in iiyak na ako sa boss, ‘Sino sasampal sa bata?’ Papunta na yun sa baliw. Hahaha! 

“Ang galing, hindi ko rin nakitang ganun pero siguro, ganun siya papunta and that is why ganun yung pakiramdam ko na parang nasa maling lugar ako dati, feeling ko walang nakakaintindi sa akin.”
