How Does Dolly De Leon Rate Kathryn Bernardo As An Actress?

Kathryn Bernardo and Dolly De Leon admit they both got intimidated by each other

If Dolly de Leon were to rate Kathryn Bernardo as an actress, she would give her a “9.”

Dolly reasons, “Kaya hindi perfect score because learning and growing is a never-ending process. There is always room for improvement and perfection can never be achieved.”

But all in all, Dolly is all praises for Kathryn especially when they were doing their scenes while shooting “A Very Good Girl.”

“She is up there, she has a very high mark. The reason why she’s a very strong actress is because she’s able to access her vulnerable side, express those emotions, and flesh them out into character.

“It takes skill and talent to do that and Kath has that.”

During the media conference of “A Very Good Girl” on August 23, Dolly shares one experience with Kathryn while shooting the film where she was actually stunned by the young actress’ acting abilities.

Dolly recalls, “There were times when in a scene, she’s so good and it’s a no-no as an actor na when you’re in a scene, pinapanood mo ang co-actor mo. Dapat in the scene ka as the character.

“But there are many times, hindi ko na ikwinento sa ‘yo ‘to [Kathryn] kasi baka ma-off ka. But there were many times na pinapanood ko lang siyang umaarte kasi ang galing galing niyang umarte, then, ika-catch ko yung sarili ko na, ‘Huy, tama na. Si Molly Suzara ka, hindi ka si Dolly.’”

Another learning moment for Dolly from Kathryn was about acting for the camera as well.

Dolly says about Kathryn, “We never talked about it, napapansin lang kita whenever the camera is handled a certain way.

Ako kasi I’m not a very technical actor, in fact, I don’t even look at the monitor, di ba, after the take? Pero she’s very technical. It is a good thing, alam niya how to play with the camera, kabisado niya yung face niya.

“She’s very in touch with her emotions and her vulnerability and she can bring it out and flesh it out to make it work with the angle of the camera. It’s a skill that I do not have that you have, totoo.”

“I really felt na it was a learning experience for me, I learned a lot from her, she has nothing to learn from me. Grabe.”

Kathryn Bernardo felt intimidated by Dolly de Leon

Meanwhile, Kathryn admits that at the beginning, she was intimidated by Dolly, who she calls Miss D.

The Kapamilya star shares, “The first time na nag-meet kami ni Miss D, siyempre, kinabahan ako kasi noong pinitch nila ito sa akin, and then I picked this material, tinanong ko agad, ‘Sino yung peg niyo for mother?’ Then, sabi nila, ‘We will try to talk to Miss D.’

“And then, sinabi ko sa kanila, ‘You think may time si Miss D? Kasi alam ko magsa-start na siya ng project niya sa Hollywood.’

“So, the moment na ka-Zoom nila si Miss D and she agreed to do this project, parang, Oh my, God! Slowly, nangyari na lahat and then nagkita na kami, yung nag-pinky swear kami, yun na yung naging bonding namin, bwelo kung paano yung working ethics namin.

It was on the set of “A Very Good Girl” when Kathryn felt the intimidation.

“Then noong nasa set na, okay, pero bigla kong na-feel na na-intimidate ako. Doon sa set, Miss D was all glammed up then nakita ko siya paano siya mag-focus to prepare for the scenes and nakita ko siya, just her.

“So, parang ako, ‘Oh my, God, I have to keep up, I gotta keep it up.’ Na-pressure ako, which is a good kind of pressure and she did make me feel na kailangan, galingan ko.

“She was supportive talaga kaya siguro na-intimidate at first, pero nagpalit siya kaagad into a good kind of pressure because I want to be good para maging worth it naman yung pag-agree ni Miss D na tanggapin itong pelikulang ito, and of course, to give justice to the story as well.”

On the other hand, Dolly was really excited when the project was offered to her as she is looking forward to work with Kathryn again.

She first met Kathryn on the set of the Kapuso series “Endless Love” in 2010, where Kathryn played the young Marian Rivera. Since then, Dolly and Kathryn have not worked together anymore.

She was 13 or 12, tapos ang kachika ko, si Miss Min, yung mommy niya.

“So, when I met her again recently for this, I was so nervous, actually. I was super nervous that night to meet her.

Kasi when sila Miss Carmi [Raymundo] talked to me when we had that Zoom meeting nga after nila ikwento lahat, sabi ko, ‘Maganda yung istorya, gusto ko itong gawin, maganda yung role. Pero sino yung Philo? Sino yung character to play the young woman?’

Noong sinabi nila, Kathryn Bernardo, sabi ko, ‘Oh my, God. Yes!’ Gusto ko ‘tong gawin agad agad, as in, kasi I admired her for a long time na sa ‘Hello, Love, Goodbye,’ ang husay husay niya doon.”

She also had a good impression of Kathryn. Dolly says, “Ang impression ko doon, mabait siyang tao kasi minsan, tayo, kapag hindi pa natin mami-meet yung tao na yun, meron tayong pre-conceived notions.

Ang impression ko sa kanya, mabait, so, sabi ko, makakasundo ko siya, Then when I met her, cool pala siya, hindi lang siya mabait.”

Laughing, Kathryn then buts in and says, “Matigas lang ulo.”

Kathryn tells the press about Dolly, “Sinasabi niya lang yun! Lahat ng eksena, tinuruan niya talaga ako grabe, she helped me.”

“A Very Good Girl,” produced by Star Cinema and directed by Petersen Vargas, opens in cinemas on September 27, 2023. It also features Kaori Oinuma, Chie Filomeno, Gillian Vicencio, and Jake Ejercito, with Angel Aquino in a special role.
