Jolina Magdangal on title issue: “Hindi ako talaga very protective sa mga ganun or very important na dapat, ganito, ganyan”

Jolina Magdangal was caught offguard and surprised that an artcard she posted on social media about her shows and achievements in showbiz actually stemmed from an issue on Twitter.

Recently, there was a fan word war on Twitter about who really owns the “Pop Icon” title: is it Jolina or GMA-7 actress-singer Julie Anne San Jose?

It was after promotional materials for “The Voice Generations” touted Julie Anne as “Pop Icon.” Fans on social media reacted, saying that Jolina deserves the title more due to her legacy and long years as an icon in showbiz.

During Jolina’s shoot for FreebieMNL Spotlight, she was asked for her reaction regarding the issue.

According to her, she was tagged with an artcard showing her portfolio of projects and awards.

She says, “Kinilig ako kasi yung iba nga doon, parang nakalimutan ko na, e. Alam mo yun, parang ‘Ay shocks, oo nga, nagawa ko pala ‘to.’ Parang ganun!”

The next day, she found out through her road manager that apparently, there was already something going on Twitter.

Jolina continues, “So, kinilig ako kaya pinost ko siya, and then the next day, sabi nito sa akin ni Xy-Za [my road manager], ‘Uy, nagkakagulo sa Twitter.’ Sabi ko, ‘Ng alin?’

“‘Yung picture na pinost mo.’ ‘Huh,’ sabi kong ganun. Tapos yun na pala, parang, kaya pala nag-start yun kasi nga may something na keme na gumawa nun.

“Ako naman, akala ko yung parang anong gulo lang, yung parang kasi minsan, kapag halimbawa, yung mga ‘July Na Magdangal,’ yung mga ganun, di ba? Feeling ko parang kaguluhan na yung ganun, e.

“Pero ito pala ay talagang parang may mga nangyayari na bagay-bagay na sila-sila.”

But Jolina never engaged in these discussions. She says, “Siguro, para kasing tapos na ako sa ganun na makikipag-ano ka pa, di ba?”

Not protective with titles

In fact, showbiz titles and monikers are never an issue for Jolina.

She says of this, “Hindi naman ako medyo ano doon sa mga title title. Parang hindi ako talaga very protective sa mga ganun or very important na dapat ganito o ganyan.”

Jolina was more paying attention to those fans who really took the time to list down her shows and milestones in showbiz, even those that she cannot remember doing.

“Siguro, nata-touch lang ako doon sa iba naman na parang mas naaalala pa. At saka talagang yung mga parang sobrang laki ng nagawa ko sa kanila para ganun yung [gawin] nila.”

However, she has just one request to these netizens: “But sana ano, kumbaga parang alam mong sobrang walang personalan yung mga ganun.“

Even then, Jolina was not exactly aware of how intense the issue was at the time.

“Hindi rin kasi ako yung masyadong mausisa, hanggang saan na ba sila umabot ng ganun. Baka naman yung iba, iba na yung sinasabi nila.

“So, hindi na ako nag-ano pa kasi feeling ko, baka doon pa ako mapasagot pero kung ano, wala naman.”

Good words for Julie Anne

Most importantly, she is okay with Julie Anne. In fact, she has only nice words to say for the Kapuso singer-actress, touted by GMA-7 as “Asia’s Limitless Star.”

Jolina says of Julie, “I think si Julie Anne ay magaling na artist. Naniniwala ako sa kakayahan niya, nagagandahan ako sa boses niya, nagagalingan ako sa kanya, and okay kami!

“Magkasama kami dati sa ‘Party Pilipinas,’ so, bata pa siya noon, magkakasama na kami noon.

“And wala akong na-encounter sa kanya na, ‘Ay naku, ito,’ yung mga ganun, wala!”

That was one of the reasons why she was surprised there was a social media discussion going on about them.

“Kaya yung ano, sabi ko, isa lang siguro ito sa mga parang yung ginagawa lang ng mga dati, pero parang umabot ito sa mga news? 

“Parang okay, so, sabi ko, siguro sa mga fans kasi ngayon nga, dahil sa social media lahat talaga meron silang kumbaga, lugar para magbalitaktakan.”

Going back to Julie Anne, Jolina says there’s no reason why they have to pitted against each other.

She explains, “I think hindi na siguro pinapatagal yung ganun kasi pareho naman kaming nagtatrabaho nang maayos, di ba? Ako ay may mga anak na at siya ay kinikilig ako sa kanila ni… [Rayver Cruz, Julie’s boyfriend].

“Noong nakita ko nga si Rayver, parang akala ko noong nag-‘Showtime,’ yung marami sila dun, akala ko nandun siya, e. ‘Tapos kinumusta ko siya kay Rayver kaya okay naman. Wala naman na akong ano dun na parang violent reaction.”

Jolina was talking about the first episode of “It’s Showtime” on GTV where GMA-7 talents performed for the Kapamilya show’s opening number.

But a few weeks after, Jolina and Julie Anne finally met when the latter had a guest appearance on the show. Both were judges of the show’s singing contest, “Tawag ng Tanghalan.”

Jolina and Julie Anne even held hands in one of the show’s moments while sitting on the judges’ chair, and Jolina posted their photo on social media.

Her caption reads, “Finally… its really nice to see you, chika with you and laugh with you. Labyu Japs!”

Julie replied in the comments section, “Love you ate Jolens [heart emoji]”

In her interview with FreebieMNL, Jolina again reiterates that what she posts on social media, especially if it’s coming from fans or a throwback photo that shows her projects or milestones, is only because she appreciates their effort in editing videos or photos for her.

She says with a smile, “Yung mga pino-post ko na halimbawa, may nagdikit naman nung ako, ate Jaya, at saka si ate Regine [Velasquez], na may mga nag-react din na parang yung mga yun, pino-post ko dahil nakita ko or may nag-send sa akin ‘tapos kinilig ako, not for anything else.”
