1. Artificial Turf

One of the most obvious and popular lawn alternatives if you still like the idea of your garden being green is to install artificial grass instead. This grass is made of plastic, but good quality ones look real, so at first glance, your garden won’t look any different from anyone else’s. However, as you look a little more closely, you’ll find that it’s a great alternative because it never grows, of course. Therefore, you don’t have to deal with it – you can just enjoy it as it is. 

There are some downsides to artificial turf, however, and they’re worth thinking about. One of them, as we said, is that it’s made of plastic, and that’s not great for the environment. The other is that it does still need some maintenance; it needs to be swept or hosed down to keep it looking good. Plus, don’t walk on it in bare feet in the summer, as it can get very hot (so it’s not ideal for pets, either). 

2. A Deck Extension 

A deck extension is an ideal thing to install if you want to give yourself some more outdoor space while reducing how much lawn you have. Decks give you a fantastically versatile space you can use for all sorts of things, including eating, entertaining, and just relaxing. Compared to a lawn, decks are much easier to take care of and clean, and they’ll only look messy if you neglect them for too long. Provided you have a regular cleaning schedule, your deck should stay looking good.  

A deck extension is literally what it says; it’s an addition to your deck to make it bigger. It can be made in lots of different materials, depending on your preferences and the original deck (most people try to match it up). Once you have more deck and less lawn, you can add more things, like an entire outdoor kitchen, an outdoor cinema, or more chairs for lounging in.

3. Plant Ground Cover

You might want to keep your garden looking green, but you don’t want a lawn to tackle, and you don’t like the idea of artificial grass either. There is a solution that falls in the middle; ground cover. 

Ground cover is made up of plants that grow along the ground and, as you might expect, cover it. That means things like moss, clover, or creeping thyme, for example, which are all great lawn alternatives because they hardly need any maintenance at all, and your garden can still look lush and lovely.
