Jaylon Carlies of the Colts Compares His Switch to LB to Cato June

Players have a history of being converted by the Indianapolis Colts to positions other than their college positions. While at Auburn, Braden Smith played mostly guard, but he is currently one of the best right tackles in the NFL. Will Fries played tackle at Penn State during his collegiate career before switching to right guard. Rodney Thomas II, a Linebacker for Yale, was moved to safety by the Colts defense. With Jaylon Carlies, whom the Colts picked with the No. 151 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, they will now try to repeat the feat. Although Carlies was listed by the Missouri Tigers as a safety, the Colts have stated that they believe Carlies should play linebacker in the NFL. Anywhere he aligns, Carlies is content to possess Colt traits.

Following the draft, Carlies said, “I really consider this opportunity to be a blessing in general.” “They just took a chance on me and I’m (going to) make sure I pay them back whatever way I can.” Despite having a safety designation, Carlies was a versatile defensive player who played in many areas of the formation. Over his four seasons at Mizzou, he saw action at cornerback, safety, and linebacker. Carlies, who played a variety of positions, finished his college career with 221 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, nine interceptions, 17 passes defensed, three sacks, and three forced fumbles. Carlies played 299 snaps last season at free safety, 153 as a box defender, and 141 in the slot, per Pro Football Focus. Carlies’s tasks were game plan specific, altering every match according on the kind of opponent they were up against and the habits of the other squad.

“My main focus at Mizzou was safety,” Carlies said. “I had that role from my sophomore to senior years; my first position was in the corner. However, it felt like my role in the schemes we were running was to essentially play the position of an outside linebacker in some of the coverages and formations we had designed.”Just based on who else we performed with,” he went on. I think I ran a lot more outside linebacker position plays if we faced a lot of run-heavy opponents. However, if we’re playing a lot of passes, I primarily simply line up at safety for the duration of the game in terms of pass coverage.” However, at Carlies, who is almost 6-3 and 229 pounds, is built like a linebacker for the Colts. The Colts are looking for a linebacker with an athletic profile similar to his, which is 8.35 RAS. His explosiveness (10-5 broad jump) and quickness (4.5 40-yard dash) will be useful in showing off his ability to cover sideline to sideline.
