SAD NEWS: New York Mets announced that J. D. Martinez is Leaving today immediately after Facing…..

The Toronto Blue Jays agreed to terms with veteran infielder Eduardo Escobar on a minor-league contract Friday with an invite to spring training.

He hit .226 with six homers and 31 RBIs over 100 games last season with the New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels.

The five-foot-10 193-pound switch-hitter is expected to be in the mix for the backup infielder job with the Blue Jays.

Escobar, 35, made his big-league debut with the Chicago White Sox in 2011.

Martinez joins position players Harrison Bader, Joey Wendle and Tyrone Taylor and pitchers Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, Adrian Houser, Jake Diekman, Shintaro Fujinami and Jorge López among the notable additions the Mets have made since David Stearns took over as New York’s new president of baseball operations in October.

The Mets also have a new manager, hiring Carlos Mendoza to replace Buck Showalter as the team tries to turn the page following a disappointing 2023 season.

New York has been linked on multiple occasions to six-time All-Star J.D. Martinez and he still is available.

Martinez spent the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and was an All-Star but still hasn’t found a new home yet.

He is 36 years old but has plenty of pop left in his bat and has found success in large markets. Martinez clubbed 33 home runs last season with Los Angeles to go along with 103 RBIs in 113 games played.
