Decorating: How to Make Fake Snow for Your Holiday Decorations

How to Make Fake Snow for Your Holiday Decorations

If you plan on decorating for the holiday season, it’s a good idea to have fake Snow on hand. It can be added to almost anything, trees, ornaments, you name it.

You may be able to purchase Fake Snow at the store but making your own at home will be cheaper and more fun. This article will let you know how it’s done.

Start with Foam Balls

Place a 2-inch foam Ball onto a kitchen cutting board. Cut the ball in half with a serrated knife using a back-and-forth sawing motion. The halves do not have to be exact.

Create the Snow

Turn the ball into flakes of snow by rubbing the two halves together while holding them over a paper plate. Pour the flakes into a measuring cup adding any crumbles that were created when you cut the ball in half. Continue to rub until you have a ½ cup of foam flakes. Place the remainder of the ball and any left-over flakes into a resealable bag so you can use them for other craft projects.

Add Craft Glue

Pour the ½ cup of foam flakes into a small mixing bowl along with ¼ cup of white craft glue and 2 tbsp. of white acrylic craft paint. Use a spoon to mix the ingredients together.

Apply the Snow

The snow can be applied to decorations with a craft stick or a hard bristled paint brush. Stroke or dab it on at the desired thickness and allow it to dry before displaying the product or moving forward with decorating. Thicker applications may take several hours to dry completely.

Paint the Snow

Painting the snow is optional, but if you would like to give it a little pizzazz, use a paint that does not have a solvent like benzene or toluene as theses can dissolve the Styrofoam. Acrylic and tempera paints are your best choice. Apply a sealant to the snow and let it dry before painting for a longer lasting finish.

Tip: If your snow mixture is too thin, add more flakes. If the mixture is too thick, add a few drops of water.

Warning: Do not wash your leftover snow mixture down the drain. The foam can cause a clog. Instead, use a paper towel to wipe the excess from the bowl, then throw the towel in the trash. Wash the bowl as you normally would.

Fake snow is a great item for decorating. Now that you know how to create it, you can make up as much of it as you need. How will you be adding it to your ornamentation?
