Decorating: How to Decorate for Christmas Without Overdoing It

How to Decorate for Christmas Without Overdoing It

We’ve all seen it before. The Christmas home that’s just too much. There are lights flashing in one direction, inflatables in another and an array of wires that are likely to be detrimental to health.

And while many of us turn away in pain when we see such a decadent array, there are others that sympathize. With so many decorations to choose from, it can be hard to decide which should be boxed for next year. This makes it easy to go overboard.

Fortunately, there are ways to hold back so your décor looks tasteful. Here are some suggestions.

Spread Them Out

You may not want to leave some of your decorations boxed. If you are having trouble deciding which ones should be included and which should be left behind, make a compromise by spreading them out into other rooms. Think of Decorating your bedrooms, kitchen and even your bathroom. That way you never have to face the heartbreaking task of leaving your beloved ornaments in the cellar.

Use Symmetry

Your ornaments won’t look good if there’s an abundance of them strewn on every surface. But you may be able to get away with displaying more of them if you arrange them in an ordered fashion. Symmetry is one way to achieve this goal.

Another option is to group your items. So, if you have ten million Santa figurines, put them all on one table. They will look more like a collection than clutter.

Replace Items

Another idea for decorating without cramping your space is to switch out the basics you have in your home. So, let’s say you have a cabinet that typically features a variety of China plates. Instead of adding decorations to the cabinet and producing a cluttered look, try taking down the plates temporarily and replacing them with your holiday décor.

Be Hard on Yourself

If all else fails, you need to buckle down and decide what stays and what goes. Many people grow sentimental attachments to their ornaments, but that doesn’t mean they have to be displayed every year. If you are growing tired of them, or if they are falling apart, consider donating them, giving them a rest for a year, or just tossing them in the trash. Recycling is another option, and it may not be as heartbreaking.

Many people go big or go home during the holiday season. But if you are overdecorating your home, it may be time to take it down a notch. The tips in this article will help you achieve a tasteful yet festive look. How do you scale it back when you decorate?
