Decorating: How to Decorate Your Dorm Room for Christmas

How to Decorate Your Dorm Room for Christmas

College students can get extremely homesick during the holiday season. One way to lift spirits is to decorate your dorm room.

Decorating a dorm room can be challenging. For one, they tend to be small spaces. Add to the fact that you probably dorm with a roommate who may or may not be into Christmas decorations and you have a real challenge on your hand.

So, what can you do to keep things small and tasteful? Here are a few ideas.

Christmas Throw Pillows

Christmas pillows are a terrific addition because they can stay on your side of the room and, when placed on a bed or chair, they won’t take up extra space. They also don’t require any installation. You can buy pillows or pillow covers that can be placed over your existing pillows.

Decorate Your Door

Another way to keep decorations from taking up precious real estate is to hang them on your door. You may need your roommate’s approval, but if they give you the okay, you can proceed with any number of decorations including signs, wreaths, swag and more. It’s great for spreading cheer throughout the building.

Lights

Lights may seem like a huge undertaking in a dorm room, but the nice thing about them is, they can be localized to your items only. For example, you can put them around your desks or use them as a canopy for your bed. Hopefully your roomie won’t be irritated by the light.

A Mini Tree

A dorm room won’t fit a full Christmas tree, but a mini tree is doable. You can buy one that’s already decorated or decorate it yourself. It can easily be placed on a desk or nightstand.

Hit the Window

The window is another area that you can dress up without cluttering your small space. One easy option is to add stickers that can be removed after the Christmas season ends. Other ideas include lights, a wreath, and/or a garland across your windowsill.

Ornaments

You may not be able to have a tree in your room, but you can still hang the ornaments. Ornaments can go just about anywhere. You can hang them in discreet places, like on the side of your bed, or create more of a grand gesture by hanging a bunch from your ceiling, roommate permitting, of course.

Decorating a dorm room can seem limiting, but with some creativity, you will find there are several options available. Which will you be integrating into your design?
