Travel: The Ribeauville Medieval Christmas Market is an Unforgettable Experience

Ribeauville is a commune in the Haut Rhin department in Grand Est in the northeast region of France. It sits at the foot of the Vosges Mountains. It dates to ancient times. In the 8th century, it was home to some of the most famous nobles in Alsace.

Parts of Ribeauville are surrounded by ancient walls and it is filled with several medieval buildings. It is also home to old churches and a saline spring with a temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. It sits across from the ruins of three famous castles.

It should come as no surprise that Ribeauville is the site of one of the most exciting medieval Christmas markets in France. Here’s what you can expect when you visit.

About the Market

The market happens over the course of two weekends during the Advent season, typically the first two weekends in December. It is open from 10 AM to 7 PM on Saturday and 10 AM to 6 PM on Sunday. It offers a fairy tale setting that is complemented by the half-timbered houses that surround it.

The market is not just a place to shop, it’s an experience. You will see dancers, street entertainers, and acrobats as you walk from square to square. It really takes you back to olden times.

You won’t want to miss out on seeing the market at night. That’s when strange creatures straight out of myths emerge to walk the streets. Fire eaters provide illumination in the darkness.

The vendors are also costumed and sell a variety of items that are symbolic of the medieval period. These include aromatic soups, mulled wine, and wild boar roasting on an open spit.

Things to Eat

There are plenty of delicious foods being sold at the market to warm your heart and soul. These include rustic breads, homemade apple bread, hard-pressed cider with warmed spices, soup heated on a fire pit, escargot in white wine and mussels, and roasted chestnuts.

Gift Items

You will also find a wide range of gift items including medieval-themed toys, decorations, mugs, home décor, and more.

While in the City

The Christmas market will be the main attraction during a holiday visit, but there are plenty of other things to do in the area check out. For instance, if you take a stroll up the main street of Grand Rue from the Jardin de Ville to place de la Republique beyond Butchers’ Tower, you will see your share of decorations on homes and in shop windows.

There are will also be a variety of events and performances taking place. One to take note of is the Christmas Cellars.

As you may or may not know, Ribeauville is surrounded by vineyards. During the holidays, winegrowers open their cellars to visitors for tastings, concerts, and workshops. If you would like to attend, it’s best to book at least 48 hours in advance.

If you love medieval culture and are looking for a Christmas market experience, Ribeauville is the place to visit. It offers tons of excitement, delicious food, and awesome gifts. Will you be making it a destination on your holiday travels?
