History of the Market

Although the city has a long history of Christmas markets, the Medieval Market wasn’t established until 1998. It put Esslingen on the map, and it was named Best Christmas City in 2018. Its fairytale vibe provides the perfect backdrop for a market to take place.

Booths

The market features over 80 colorful booths that offer wood carvings, felt hats and scarves, nativity scene figurines, tin toys, decorations, and turner crafts. There are also several medieval-inspired goods available such as delicious treats from the Orient, handcrafted knives, handmade candles, lighters made of tinder and polypore, and more. The vendor vibe aims to bring the spirit of medieval times to life so expect plenty of bartering and haggling.

There are also plenty of treats and refreshments to enjoy including crispy waffles with cinnamon cream and applesauce, stuffed pastries, freshly baked Huerekaners (bread filled with cheese and ham), grilled pork, stews, duck leg, venison goulash, and more. Vegetarians can enjoy foods like pakoras (vegetable fritters), falafel and potato dishes. Wash it down with sweet mead, brandy punch, hot spiced beer, hot chocolate, mulled wine, and more.

There are also three booths set up for non-profit organizations that will gladly accept your donations.

A tall Christmas pyramid sits in the middle of the booths. It is fashioned after the traditional pyramids from Erz Mountains. It is very prominent and makes a great gathering place for visitors and locals to catch up on recent events.

Entertainment

There are plenty of activities at the market for guests to enjoy. The streets are filled with jugglers and streetwalkers. You will also find a variety of theater, dance, and music performances taking place on the stage. The kids’ section offers a variety of Medieval games and activities.
