Travel: What You Can Expect When You Visit the Christmas Market in Wroclaw, Poland

Wroclaw is located on the Oder River in western Poland. It’s known for its Market square which features a modern fountain, a Gothic Old Town Hall with an astronomical clock, and elegant townhouses. Other features include the Panorama of Raclawice, a painting that pays tribute to the 1794 battle for independence, and the Centennial Hall auditorium with its giant dome and spire.

Wroclaw is terrific to visit any time of year, but it really lights up when its Christmas Market happens. The many stalls fill the city with a sense of cheer and nostalgia. This article will let you know what to expect when you visit for the holiday season.

About the Market

The Market kicks off in mid to late November and ends on December 31. It takes place in four main areas, Market Square (Rynek), Salt Square (Plac Solny), Swidnicka Street, and Olawka Street.

Additionally, many local stores will be offering a variety of seasonal goods to add to the festive atmosphere.

The market is one of Poland’s biggest and most beautiful. It lights up the city and includes over 260 wooden stalls.

Food and Drink to Try

You can be sure that the market will have tons of great food for sale. Oscypek is recommended. This is a special smoked cheese that comes from the Polish mountains. It is served topped with cranberries.

There will also be plenty of classic dishes including sausages, bigos, skewers, potato pancakes, and other Polish food dishes. Festival fare like churros, fries, langos, sweet chestnuts, crepes, chimney cakes, and more are also available.

You can count on a good amount of mulled wine being sold. The wine is available in souvenir mugs which you will pay a deposit for. The mugs feature a variety of shapes. For instance, a popular design was the Christmas shoe which made an appearance just a few years ago.

The deposit will not be returned unless you bring the mug back. However, some people hold on to their mugs purposely. They have been known to attract a pretty penny when sold on sites like eBay, etc.

What to Buy

The market is also a great place to find gift items and decorations. The decorations include hand-painted baubles, tree ornaments, tablecloths, tableware, candles, wreaths, and more. Most are handmade

You will also find clothes and accessories like gloves, socks, hats, scarves, and sweaters made of sheep’s wool. Other stands sell t-shirts, handbags, jewelry, and eco-friendly wearable goods.

You will also find ceramics, housewares, beauty products, and more.

Activities

In addition to terrific shopping, visitors will find no end to the attractions they can enjoy when visiting the market. Children will have fun checking out the fairytale forest, visiting Santa and his elves, riding on the carousels, and engaging in arts and crafts activities. There’s also a roller coaster, horse and carriage rides, and free walking tours available. Concerts and other performances take place as well.

Wroclaw is a terrific place to visit, especially during the holiday season. Its market is sure to fill you with a sense of cheer. Will you be booking your trip for the coming year?
