Maastricht is a university city on the southern tip of The Netherlands. It is known for its medieval architecture and its deep sense of culture. Its old town section features a Gothic-style church and the Roman Basilica of St. Servatius which houses a notable collection of religious art. The Maas River bisects the city, and a futuristic-looking art museum sits on its shores.
The city is wonderful to visit any time of year, but it’s especially lovely during the holiday season. That’s when it lights up with one of the most impressive Christmas markets in Europe. Here’s what you can expect when you’re in town.
About the Market
The market kicks off in late November and ends on December 31. It runs between 10 AM to 10 PM although some food stalls stay open later.
Although there is plenty to buy at the market, it is closer to a winter carnival. There’s a Ferris Wheel, carousel, and other attractions. Guests can stroll through to take it all in.
Not all stalls take cash. In fact, when entering the market, you will be asked to buy tickets. This will allow for the purchase of admission to many of the attractions as well as some of the goods being sold.
The market is not as big as others in the cities that surround it, but it has a lot to offer including a variety of stalls and carnival rides. It is lit up like a Christmas card during the holiday season.
Ice Skating
One of the things you can enjoy at the market is the ice-skating rink. It lights up at night and looks especially lovely. Hot drinks and snacks are available at the nearby café.
The Ferris Wheel
The Ferris Wheel lights up the market. It provides a terrific view of the city and its surroundings.
Local Produce
The market is full of vendors that represent the Limburg region. The Streekproducten-Limburg chalet offers an array of everything from goat milk yogurt to truffles as well as a selection of other locally made items.
Food and Drinks
There are tons of Dutch and German foods available at the market. This includes reibekuchen (German Apple Dessert) and poffertjes (little Dutch pancakes). There are also plenty of cafes and fast-food places in the area.
Like most European markets, you can expect to find your share of Gluhwein or Mulled Wine. Many years it’s available in a souvenir mug that will remind you of your experience at the market.
Another beverage to try is the schrobbeler, a Southern beverage popular in the south of the Netherlands. It has a low alcohol content and a sweet-spicy flavor. It is served in a shot glass, and it can also be added to other drinks such as mulled wine and coffee.
Other Attractions
Other holiday attractions include several holiday scenes where you can stop and take a photo, indoor lounges where you can warm up and sip mulled wine, and visits with Santa.
If you are hungry for some Christmas market action, Maastricht is the place to find it. With so much fun to be had, you won’t want to miss out on booking your ticket for this coming year. Which of these booths or attractions will you be headed to first?
