Travel: Why the Christmas Market in Madeira is One You Can’t Miss

Madeira is an archipelago comprised of four islands. It is an autonomous region of Portugal, and it sits off the northwest coast of Africa. It is known for its wine, subtropical climate, volcanic lands, pebbly beaches, and settlements that line the deltas of the Faja River.

Its capital city of Funchal is home to botanic gardens. Its harbor hosts a New Year’s fireworks show annually.

Another thing Madeira is known for is its Christmas Market which has been called one of the best in the world. Here are some things to look out for when you’re in town for the holiday season.

About the Madeira Christmas Market

The Madeira Christmas Market takes place in the capital city of Funchal in the central pedestrian areas of Avenida Arriaga. It is part of the city’s Christmas and New Year’s festivities which kick off on December 1 and end on January 7 in accordance with the Advent season. It offers a variety of goods including flowers, souvenirs, and traditional foods and beverages.

In addition to terrific shopping, the market also provides daily activities and entertainment. These include Christmas Carols performed by folk artists. The Funchal Municipal Garden sets up a play area for toddlers. You can also visit Blandy’s Wine Lodges to taste and purchase the iconic Madeira wine.

The market attracts more than 180,000 travelers a year. It consistently ranks among the top Christmas markets in Europe as voted by various publications year after year.

The Funchal Night Market

The market is ongoing throughout the Christmas season, but its main event is the Night Market that happens on December 23. This is a Farmer’s Market with a party atmosphere. When the clock strikes midnight, all the guests gather with family and friends to sing Christmas carols and welcome the coming of Santa Claus.

Because the market is a Farmer’s Market, there will be no end to the exotic foods and beverages to try. These include:

  • Poncha, which is made with brandy, honey, and lemon juice.

  • Nikita, a milkshake made with ice cream, pineapple, and beaten cream. Beer and wine may be added to convert it into an alcoholic beverage.

  • Vine d’alhos, a holiday dish that features cubed pork marinated in wine and garlic, is typically served on December 8 to celebrate the Immaculate Conception.

  • Chicken Soup Madeira, a specially seasoned chicken soup.

  • Homemade liqueurs including aniseed, mandarin, banana, cherry, and cherry tintantum flavors. These are usually served with traditional pastries.

  • Honey cake, a Madeiran specialty that features a variety of ingredients including sugar, syrup, and spices.

There are a variety of dishes to try in addition to the ones listed above. They include garlic beef, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a variety of cakes, pies, and candies.

If you are looking for a top-notch Christmas market experience, Madeira is where it’s at. It offers a variety of gift and food items as well as special activities to enjoy. Will you be making plans to fly in for the coming season?
