If you’re like me, you probably never heard of Christmas swag until now. (Yep, I just heard about it when I was searching for topics to write this article about). But now that I know what it is, I realize I’ve seen it many times before.

And by the way, it’s not to be confused with schwag or products companies give away for free.

What is a Christmas Swag?

A Christmas swag is best described as a cross between a wreath and a garland. It is made up of a handful of fir or spruce that’s tied together, usually with a ribbon. It hangs vertically and has a wide center and a tapered end making a triangular shape. It also usually has a hook for hanging.

Where Can You Put a Christmas Swag?

A Christmas swag is quite versatile, and it can be placed almost anywhere… on a door, on a drink trolley, on a banister, on the back of a dining room chair or on a doorknob. If you place yours outdoors, make sure it’s in a sheltered spot. It can get easily ruined by the elements.

And you don’t have to hang your Christmas swag. It can also be set on a table or used as a centerpiece on its own with other items.

Christmas swags come in several diverse styles. Here are some you can choose from.

• A Scandinavian Look: You can achieve a Scandinavian look by adding frosted pinecones, and cotton balls to light artificial fir sprays

• Lush and Luxurious: For a lush look, play up the greens in your swag. Compliment the leaves with a sprinkling of eucalyptus and white berries.

• Red Berry and Pinecone: This type of swag requires pinecones, red berries and jingle bells. It’s perfect for rustic interiors.

• Flocked Teardrop: A teardrop shaped swag will have a distinct triangular shape while the flocking will provide a distinct winter wonderland theme. Play it up with bright LED lights.

• Sparkle Swag: Glitter and sparkle will bring glamour and warmth to your Christmas décor. Resist overdoing it by adding a light dusting of glitter to champagne color leaves.
