Despite announcing the launch of this novel a few months ago, I haven’t been very forthcoming on some basic details about the Book. Today we address one of those details…

The title!

Let’s get that drumroll going… 

The name of this fall’s book release is…

A Collection of Scars

A Collection of Scars is a New Adult Speculative Fiction novel with a touch of romance. It tells the story of a twisted relationship between a slave and her master, set against the backdrop of a growing rebellion. 

How I chose the title:

There was actually a different working title for this novel! Maybe I’ll share it sometime after the release date. But the reason I changed the title was because it hearkened to the wrong genre. 

When I went about finding the appropriate book title for this novel, I started by writing down major and minor themes, objects and topics that came up often in the story, and experimented with different name types outlined in this blog post.

In my first go-round naming this novel, I leaned into the slavery aspect and obedience. 

In finding the name that has stuck, I realized that my protagonist’s scars were woven into the story from start to finish, and that those scars deeply impacted her. 

What scars? What are they from? Why a collection of scars?

I guess you’ll have to read the book to find out.

A Collection of Scars is Heather Hataley’s debut novel and is set to release in the fall of 2021.
