It’s a lonely world out there

The most terrible poverty is loneliness and the feeling of being unloved”… Mother Teresa.

There is no word to describe the feeling of been lonely. You may be in the midst of hundreds of friends,  but it’s still possible to feel empty inside. None may understand what you going through.

The modern world has evolved rapidly with the advent of mobile gadgets and social media platforms, that people stay glued to their phones or laptops and rarely bother about those around them.

Five years ago, a young lady committed suicide after going through some difficult phase in her academics. She was struggling so badly, that her grades dropped in her second year. Her Dad made the situation even worse when he scolded her and made reference to her friends that were doing better than her.

Anita began to withdraw from friends and family members. She felt humiliated, hated, and unloved. Her mental state was becoming unstable. She rarely came out from her room, and nobody bothered to ask how she’s doing. Everyone was glued to the phone or television.

Every individual has a certain limit of endurance. For Anita, her entire world got shattered when she was asked to withdraw from school due to her poor grades. She couldn’t take it anymore. Three days later, she took an overdose of opioids. Nobody noticed what had happened until it was too late.

It is a lonely world out there and it’s even getting colder with each passing day. There’s an Increasing number of people going through depression. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates more than 300 million people suffer from depression worldwide. The number keeps increasing as crime rates, poverty, war, unemployment, and other complex issues keep tearing people apart.

“The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. Many in the world are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love”

Sadly, geographical location doesn’t determine the possibility of experiencing loneliness. The rich, the poor, the educated, and uneducated all experience loneliness.
People mask their loneliness with beautiful smiles and lovely makeups. Unfortunately, in their quiet moments when they are alone.

The pain of being lonely haunts them. It’s a dark world filled with painful memories. I’ve been there and I know how it hurts. People pretend they love you when it’s rosy and good. The moment everything falls apart and things aren’t working as planned. You soon realized it’s you against the world. Doesn’t matter your religion, color, race, or status.

It’s a lonely world when there’s no one to share every sorrow and pain. Sometimes, the sunshine comes to brighten up your day, but it never stays forever. The cold reality of being alone soon hitting you so hard.
