Animation refers to the process of creating moving images, usually through a series of drawings, computer graphics or photographs of static objects. Some of the most common Animation techniques include traditional hand-drawn 2D animation, stop motion, 3D computer animation, and motion graphics.

Early forms of animation can be traced back thousands of years, but animation became a true art form and industry with the rise of film in the early 20th century. Pioneers like Winsor McCay, Walt Disney and Max Fleischer developed many of the techniques still used today.

Classic hand-drawn cartoons flourished in the 1930s-1950s during the “Golden Age of Animation.” Iconic characters like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Betty Boop and Popeye were created during this era. The Disney studios were powerhouses of animation, producing the first feature-length animated film (Snow White) in 1937.

Animation transitioned from film to television starting in the 1950s. Hanna-Barbera Productions introduced limited animation techniques to produce animated TV series quickly and cheaply. Saturday morning cartoons became an American tradition.

The rise of computers starting in the 1970s allowed for digital ink and paint and 2D animation. By the 1990s, 3D CGI animation became the norm for feature films, pioneered by Pixar and DreamWorks. Notable CGI films include Toy Story, Shrek, Frozen and Toy Story.

Today, animation is a hugely popular global industry spanning film, TV, video games, online media and more. Styles range from classic 2D to 3D CGI to stop motion. Global audiences eagerly await animated blockbusters from major studios as well as indie animators.
