What is ‘Fernweh’ Because It Could Be Exactly What You Are Feeling

There have been a lot of changes since 2020. People quarantined at home realize that it is time to make some changes in their lives. They could decide to rearrange their home, move, or desire to Travel. Those people who are aching to travel might feel beyond wanderlust and into the fernweh territory.

Fernweh

Most of the English-speaking world has adopted the word wanderlust, but it is a German word that combines wander, meaning “wander,” and lust, meaning “desire.” Most people would desire wanderlust as an itch to travel and see the world. However, fernweh takes the feeling to travel a step further. Fernweh translates to “distance sickening” or “far woe”. When you experience the desire to travel that is so strong that it causes a yearning pain, this is fernweh.

Easing Fernweh

If you find that Trip that you have your heart set on has been canceled or pushed back. How can you ease the need to travel and get out of your routine?

  1. Play Tourist

Find local attractions that you have yet to visit or town areas that you don’t frequent and explore. Discover what makes those attractions special or that area unique. If you have a hotel or bed and breakfast in your area that you have been wanting to explore, this could be the perfect time to make a mini vacation.

  1. Learn a New Language

One of the best things about international travel is to immerse yourself in different languages. Though you might fumble a bit, typically, you can find your way and get your point across. If your trip got moved to next year, then you might want to take this time to learn the language. Not only will learning a new language help with the feeling of fernweh, but it will help you experience new things when you are finally able to travel again.

  1. Plan Future Trips

The anticipation of travel often provides a little thrill; knowing that you will have all of these fun adventures make some people excited. While your current plans might be on hold, it could be an excellent time to lock in flights, cruise plans, or RV schedules. Due to the lack of demand with COVID, some travel outlets provide services at a discount to entice people to book travel plans.

  1. Meet with Other Travelers

Part of any good travel experience is meeting new people and listening to their stories. Find other travelers in your area, host a party or get together for a meal, and reminisce about past trips with them. You could even add a projector to share photos and videos of your experience. Sharing past trips could give you ideas for future trips and journeys.

  1. Learn a New Activity

Have you ever looked at trip activities and wanted to go diving, horseback riding, or any other activity that takes a bit of skill to enjoy? While you are experiencing some travel downtime, this could be your opportunity to learn a new skill that will take you on great adventures when you can see the world again.
